To create a learning environment where students embrace mathematics with confidence, resilience, and a positive mindset—free from fear and emotional distress.
The CALM program envisions a school culture where mathematics is no longer seen as a source of anxiety, but as a subject of curiosity, growth, and possibility. It is a vision where every student, regardless of their past math experiences, feels capable, supported, and empowered to engage with math meaningfully.
The mission of CALM (Conquering Anxiety, Loving Mathematics) is to reduce the presence and impact of mathematics anxiety among students through early identification, adaptive coping training, emotional support systems, and the active involvement of teachers, parents, and peers.
Grounded in research and driven by empathy, CALM is committed to:
Helping students recognize and manage their math anxiety;
Promoting problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies;
Encouraging collaborative learning and peer support;
Training educators to foster math-friendly classrooms; and
Guiding parents in creating a positive math atmosphere at home.
The CALM program is designed to address both the emotional and academic challenges associated with mathematics anxiety. Specifically, it aims to:
1. Identify the Levels of Math Anxiety. Utilize validated assessment tools (e.g., MARS) to determine the presence and severity of math anxiety among Grade 7 students.
2. Strengthen Adaptive Coping Mechanisms. Guide students toward healthier ways of managing math-related stress, particularly through problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies.
3. Discourage Dysfunctional Coping. Raise awareness of ineffective behaviors such as avoidance, denial, or disengagement, and provide positive alternatives.
4. Empower Teachers as Emotional-Educational Responders. Equip teachers with tools and strategies to recognize signs of math anxiety, apply supportive interventions, and encourage student participation.
5. Engage Parents as Partners. Involve parents in supporting their children’s emotional and academic well-being, both at home and in collaboration with the school.
6. Build a Math-Positive School Culture. Implement school-wide initiatives that promote enthusiasm for math, reduce the stigma associated with struggle, and celebrate perseverance and progress.
7. Monitor, Evaluate, and Improve. Track student progress, assess the effectiveness of interventions, and continually refine the program based on feedback and data.
This vision, mission, and goal framework ensures that CALM is more than just a set of activities—it is a holistic, sustainable, and research-informed commitment to student well-being and success in mathematics.
