Right now, the 6th grade is organizing a school-wide Shred Day recycling project to help reduce paper waste and promote recycling at Parker. Students are working with teachers, maintenance staff, housekeeping, and community members to collect and recycle paper safely and responsibly. They are creating posters, flyers, screen announcements, Google Forms, and presentations to spread awareness and encourage classrooms and families to save paper for recycling and shredding. Students are also mapping recycling bin locations, delivering labeled collection boxes to classrooms, tracking and weighing collected paper, researching recycling companies like PaperTiger, and creating infographics to show the project’s impact. In addition, they are partnering with first grade classes, and helping organize the final Shred Day event where all paper will be securely shredded onsite by a professional recycling company.
Updates:
5/11:Update from our parent-helper regarding a shred truck - I’m writing because I ran into a bit of a road block when reaching out to arrange a Shred Day truck. Unfortunately, the Cook County Sheriff’s office said they can only rent Shred trucks to me for events in the district within which I work (which is for Rep. Gong-Gershowitz and includes Evanston, Wilmette, Glenview, etc). I then called State Rep. Margaret Croke’s office to see if they would be willing to help. Unfortunately, they were very non committal. They said they’ve had three Shred Day events already this year and don’t want to host a fourth in the next few weeks. She said they would possibly be willing to rent a truck for the Fall but not certain because of the election/other commitments. I am so sorry! Unless, I hear otherwise, it sounds like the Shred Day event will need to be taken off the table as an option for now.
5/13:Read Mr. Simonetti (head of facilities/maintenance) email; So here's the scoop on this...there's a recycling committee that Susan Elliott oversees but I'm not sure how much they've done this year. As for the answers to your questions...there are 8 green recycling bins throughout the school and they're taken out once every couple of week and I think 4 shredding bins that get picked up every six weeks by a company called R4. That's pretty much it.
5/14:Thanks to Ms. Stacy, we have a company called PaperTiger that can come to Parker with a truck to shred our paper onsite, tentative date is set for 5/28
5/18: An Email was sent out to Parker adults asking them to start saving their paper in their classrooms and offices. We will be delivering boxes to classrooms and offices that request to participate. Later next week we will collect the boxes of paper and take it outside to see it shredded when the truck arrives.
5/20:PaperTiger has been confirmed for 5/28 (Day 8) between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Once they arrive, students in this group will be called from their classes to help bring paper out to the truck (on Webster) for shredding.
5/22: The climate club is working on securing a shred truck from the city for next school year. This truck will be free and we will invite the community to contribute.
5/27: 238.5lbs of paper collected and weighed
5/28: PaperTiger arrived and shredded our paper. Check out photos of shred day and other efforts
