Weisser Park Fine Arts Magnet school, along with six additional FWCS schools, has been involved in professional learning that has transformed our instructional and learning environment to one that is transdisciplinary, problem-based, inquiry-based and hands-on that is accessible to all students. In order to achieve this, we have participated in learning with outside consultants as well as those around us that serve as strong mentors in STEAM education. Even in the challenges of the pandemic, we maintained our instructional plan to include guest presenters, residential experts and school-based “field trips” to support college and career pathways in STEAM related fields. The instruction provided by our staff aligns with the elements of Learning Environment, Pedagogical Practices and Leveraging Digital from New Pedagogies for Deep Learning. Professional learning, collaboration and coaching are provided around research-based instructional strategies and best practices for STEAM curriculum and instruction. We are a one-to-one school district with an iPad or laptop in the hands of every student..
All teachers, including all special area teachers, implement the planned integrated STEAM learning opportunities on a bi-weekly basis through STEAM innovation, time in the STEAM lab, and unified whole-school units of study that include end-of-unit STEAM celebrations called Town Hall Meetings and Common Threads.
