The staff at Weisser Park Elementary understands the importance of all stakeholders working together in order to build a culture of learning that encourages students to flourish. It is imperative that the physical space is designed to foster a learning environment that promotes critical thinking, student discourse and collaboration. The furniture allows for flexible seating and grouping based on the needs of the lesson. The variety of materials and supplies are plentiful to support instruction and learning for all students.
Weisser Park Elementary school partners closely with parents by inviting them into the learning community for performances as well as hands-on STEAM events. To extend the classroom opportunities, parents are able to experience the STEAM activities at home with their children first hand with learning materials provided for them. It is important to the teachers Weisser Park Elementary that parents experience and share in the learning first hand in order for them to see what makes their school so special.
The district has created a schedule which provides teachers multiple opportunities to collaborate each day with their colleagues in order to provide students with rich learning experiences. Teachers utilize a cross-curricular approach to incorporate multiple subject areas into the planning process. The administrative team members are active participants in supporting teachers in the planning process.
Decision Making regarding planning and implementation of STEAM is the work of teacher leaders, administration, parents and community members. This group meets regularly to review staff feedback and plan STEAM instruction that supports our commitment to the education of our students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
Weisser Park Elementary' s STEAM program has a plan to implement STEAM curriculum regardless of modality. Despite the challenges caused by COVID-19, our staff and district is committed to ensuring that all students are educated to high standards. Whether in-person or remote, our students at Weisser Park are provided integrated STEAM lessons through purposeful collaborative planning.
The dedicated staff at Weisser Park meets several times a week to plan interdisciplinary STEAM learning opportunities. Our ELL and Special Education teachers are a vital part of these meetings to ensure that every student's individual needs are met. Each team also meets monthly with our STEAM consultants to enrich our units of study.

A variety of tools are used to provide instructional feedback to Irwin teachers. The Rise Rubric, DEEP Learning Walks, and the STEM Instructional Progression rubric guide instructional practices. Indicators within the RISE Rubric focus on best practices for STEM instruction. The Deep Learning Walk tool guides conversations for teams to reflect on student learning, assessment of learning and anticipate practical next steps.The STEM Instructional Progression tool is used to show the development of creating a STEM culture.
Our staff participates in extensive professional learning in the area of STEAM instruction. Weekly professional learning opportunities before school are focused on STEAM instruction. Outside consultants provides staff training, monthly common planning support, and weekly lessons that integrate STEAM instruction. Professional Learning plans are continually revised to support the integration of STEAM instruction.
