Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm Newsletter
Hello Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm Community!
Welcome to the first issue of the Parent, Guardian and International Community Newsletter. The newsletter will have three parts; Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm - All School section, International School section and Bilingual School section.
We have a lot of learning, adventures and events taking place every day in our building so this will just be a snapshot of the excitement. It is important to refer to the mentor/classroom teachers newsletters and Skolplattformen to get the weekly details of your students school life.
Some friendly reminders;
Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm is a phone free zone. When student and parents enter the front gate all technology should be put away...yes, even the parents, we need to be a model of good behaviour for the students.
We are also a smoke and tobacco free school and no visitors, parents or guardians should be smoking within 10 meters of the school building.
For safety and security, ensure you drop your student off at the front door and pick them up at the front play-yard. No parents or guardians are allowed in the hallways during school hours unless a meeting has been scheduled ahead of time, authorized by school admin or teacher. This is to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for your children. The halls are very crowded and loud with too many people which does not provide a calm climate for education to take place. Also, it is very hard to keep track of whose a parent to whom so for safety we need to make this school-wide policy. For those who do have appointments for meetings be sure to check-in, sign-in, obtain a "visitor" name tag, check-out, sign-out and return the name tag at the reception area.
If you need to pick your student up before school is dismissed please inform the teacher and school Administrator, Erica Jensen at international@futuraskolan.se or Mats Weinhoff at stockholm@futuraskolan.se
Sincerely,
Corina Rader, Head of Schools

Sponsored by the International PTAEach year, the faculty, staff, parents, and children at Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm come together to celebrate a special holiday: United Nations Day.
This is the biggest event in our school and we will celebrate it this year by organizing a multicultural day on October 23th.
Please join us and help us create an opportunity for students, parents, faculty and staff to experience the flavors, aromas, colors, sounds and stories of your home country in a vibrant celebration of the many nations and cultures that have come together at our school.

Catherine Fuentes Bohman
Bilingual School Grade 5 Teacher/IPC CoordinatorHi! I'm Catherine and I come from Hertfordshire, England. I am a fun-loving teacher who enjoys travel, cooking, trying new restaurants, tending to my balcony allotment and watching sports. The journey of life brought me to Sweden three years ago to take advantage of a fabulous offer from Stockholm University - a Master's degree in International and Comparative Education. My background is in Development studies and my bachelor focused on Latin America, where I lived and taught (and traded coffee!) in my early twenties. It was there that I saw the huge impact that education has and could have on people's lives, both in developed and developing countries. There was just one problem, though - the low quality of education, its suitability for the 21st century and its lack of relevance to students was a big obstacle to their progress and motivation. Upon return to England, I enrolled in teacher education and soon after taught Modern Foreign Languages in secondary schools, all the time gaining experience and discovering more about what I considered to be education of fantastic quality. In my opinion, worth while schooling should involve activities that enable critical thinking and a high element of authenticity based on the international world that surrounds us. I love teaching the IPC at Futuraskolan; I studied the positive effects of the IPC in schools (England and Sweden) for my Master's degree thesis and am convinced that it provides students with an education that equips them for the world that we live in. I look forward to supporting the development of the IPC at Futuraskolan and ensuring that our curriculum is stimulating enough for our internationally-minded students.

Mitu Verma
Bilingual School Lead Teacher & IMYC CoordinatorMaths Teacher & Grade 8 MentorHello,
I am Mitu Verma, Imyc coordinator and Förstelärare (Lead Teacher) from Futuraskolan International School of Stockholm. I am teaching Mathematics to grade 6-9.
Born and brought up in small city of India, Ranchi. I am a trained Tabla player, a classical Indian instrument. Writing poems, sketching still life and gardening are my hobbies. Travelling and spending time with family is my way of relaxing for there is a lot to see in this wonderful world! Last summer was spent well travelling to different cities and the countryside in Sweden. Being a mom to a wonderful girl and finding my best friend in my better half has added meaning to life.
Being a Electrical & Electronics Engineer from a premiere Institute, I was working at an MNC but soon realised that my heart belongs somewhere else. Then, I pursued my dream to become a pedagog. I chose my passion as my career. Teaching gives me solace as this is a vibrant, noble profession. There is so much energy in this work.
I am super scared of slipping on ice!, which makes the winters very interesting for me:)

Simon Phillips
International School IMYC Coordinator - Humanities Teacher & Grade 8 MentorFrom Bath, UK
Studied at University of Birmingham, the Open University and UCL institute of Education.
Some of my favourite places include the West Country in England, Koh Samui, Thailand and Seoul, South Korea where I spent more than 3 amazing years teaching. I worked in many sectors before deciding to become a teacher including Utilities, Manufacturing and Consultancy. I chose to become an educator because I wanted to make a difference in young people’s lives. I needed a new challenge and a change in direction. On reflection I decided that my passion for learning, my desire to contribute something genuinely positive to society on a daily basis and a career with a sense of purpose and pride could only be satisfied by becoming a member of the teaching profession. I have never looked back! I have the best job in the world and am so lucky to work with such amazingly dedicated and passionate people every single day.
