Warm Springs Handbook 2019-2020

Principal Iwata's Message:

We can't believe how fast September has gone by. Students are settled in and are doing a great job! We had our first Lock Down Drill and Fire Drill. Students were able to complete the Fire Drill portion in five minutes. They remained quiet the entire time and you could hear a pin drop as they all waited for the "all clear" sign.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month! We’ve already had two assemblies on this topic. One was presented by Mrs. Carter to all students and the other was a BMX assembly. Students were entertained and motivated to treat one another with kindness and respect. Students had a blast!

This months Character Trait is Responsibility: “I am dependable and perform at my best.” Please encourage your child to demonstrate and practice this through out the month. Not only with school work, but especially with family life. Here is the presentation we presented to students during the Character Assembly. You may want to review these skills with your child throughout the month.

For Halloween, please make sure to read directions in this newsletter below.

Scott Iwata

Principal

GROWTH MINDSET QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

“We find comfort among those who agree with us, and growth among those who don’t.”

- Frank A. Clark

WARM SPRINGS VISION STATEMENT: Warm Springs empowers all students to be socially responsible, global citizens, while maximizing their unique potential in a safe and positive learning environment.

7th Grade Math Placement Test

The Math Test for 7th Grade Math Placement will be held earlier this year with a testing window of March 30 - April 8, 2019. For your planning purposes, please review this planning document. All 6th grade teachers should have covered the math standards addressed on the placement test by mid-March at the latest so students have time to review standards. Sites may choose to administer the test in a single day or over two days.

Reminder: Cyber Safety & Google Hang Outs

At Warm Springs Elementary we acknowledge that the safety of our students is extremely important. We have seen students, in the past, use technology in inappropriate ways. Some students have used Google Hangouts to make fun of students also known as “roasting” and posting mean comments. Please monitor your child’s use of technology and be advised that any harassment or bullying activity online may result in disciplinary action. For services such as Facebook, Instagram and Google Hang Outs, the user must be 13 years old to have an account. We thank you for your support and for working with us to address this matter and to keep our students safe and bully - free.

Eight Great Character Traits

Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing the importance of developing and showing good character at school, home, and in the community. During the month of September, we focused on "RESPECT." At our first character assembly, teachers awarded students with certificates for their exemplary show of respectful character at school. As October starts, we will be focusing on "RESPONSIBILITY." As a school wide project, we are creating a "Responsibili-tree" to decorate our main hallway. Each class is creating responsibility leaves filled with ways to show responsibility at home, school, and in the community.

A message to reinforce at home... Reponsibility is proving that you can be trusted with what is expected of you.

Instructional and Testing Updates

  • This year, GATE testing for 3rd graders will occur during the week of January 27. Students in grades 4 and 5 who have not previously been tested will also be assessed. For more information on the GATE program, please see the FUSD GATE Handbook.

Counselor's Corner

Hi Families,

Last month's Great Trait was Responsibility! We worked together as a school to create a Responsibili-Tree in our main hallway, the leaves on our tree lists ways that our Warm Springs family can show responsibility at home, at school, and the community. If you get a chance, come check it out!

Something that goes hand-in-hand with responsibility is integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Check out this handout on integrity and share with your child(ren) what doing the right thing means to you. Maybe you even have examples of when you chose to use integrity that you can share with your child(ren). It's so important to instill these values in our children at a young age so they can practice early on and be an upstanding citizen!
