Selective Service
According to Federal Law, all men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. You must register with Selective Service to stay eligible for student loans, government jobs, job training and obtaining or renewing a driver's license in most states. Registration is easy and takes only a matter of minutes. Simply go online at www.sss.gov or visit the local Post Office and ask for a registration card.
The ASVAB
Students who are serious about exploring their military options should take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). The ASVAB is a nine-part, three-hour test designed to identify a student's aptitudes and strengths. Taking the ASVAB in no way obligates a student to the military. A student must, however, obtain a minimum score on the ASVAB in order to enlist in the military. Recruiters usually make the testing arrangements for the ASVAB. Call the local recruiting office to schedule a testing date.
United States Military Academies:
Military Academies are undergraduate colleges that prepare young men and women to become professional officers in the United States Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines. High school students who are interested in attending one of these academies, should begin the process as early as their Sophomore year, but not later than their Junior* year.

*Students considering a Military Academy (West Point, Annapolis, Air Force, or Merchant Marine) must contact the Military Academy of interest so a pre-candidate file may be opened. To be considered for an appointment you must receive a nomination from a nominating authority. Congressman Pete Stark may nominate up to 10 students each year.
