La Hondura Canyon
Gámbita (Santander, Colombia)
La Hondura Canyon (at River Huertas) is a breathtaking nature spot located at ~1.800 m high in the Eastern Andes of Colombia. The land is managed by nonprofit Fundación Montecito, and we are working towards a designation of this area as a Civil Society Nature Reserve, to carry a further environmental culture development involving the local community, also to have bird tourism and other ecological options as a self-sustainable activity able to improve conservation and local economy in the years to come.
The area is geographically located between two national natural parks of Colombia (Fauna & Flora Sanctuaries of Guanentá Alto Río Fonce, and Iguaque). Whilst being well conserved, it still needs some improvements to ensure it can upgrade as a wildlife sanctuary and serve as a biological corridor for birds and other species.
From 2nd semester of year 2020 we are determined to start with first research in the area and site adaptations, both to support our application as a private conservation area recognised by our government, and to offer first services for visitors. This purpose is managed as a project from our NGO, aiming to contribute on ensuring continuous improvement of this Andean ecosystem, to benefit both nature and local communities.
