Contact Tracing and Quarantine
Contact Tracing and Quarantine
Quarantine and isolation orders come from the Department of Health.
FCSD assists with contact tracing by providing information about:
close contacts, duration of exposure, vaccination status and mask-wearing.
The information below outlines general guidelines used by the Department of Health for contact tracing. Other factors may be considered when determining quarantine. Those decisions are made by our local health department using the information that is available at the time of tracing. If information is unavailable or unclear, other factors may be considered by the Department of Health when determining quarantine.
What is considered "close contact?"
The Centers for Disease Control, NYS Department of Health and Oswego County Department of Health define close contact in the K-12 classroom setting, as a student who was within 3 feet of a COVID positive individual.
During certain activities, such as while eating and during physical education, a close contact is a student who is within 6 feet of a COVID positive individual.
How long does the exposure to a positive person have to be to result in quarantine?
Exposure of 15 minutes or more (total) in a 24-hour period is the timeframe that is considered.
How does mask-wearing impact quarantine decisions?
Students who are close contacts and consistently wear a close-fitting mask over both their mouth and nose, are much less likely to be quarantined. If masks are not worn consistently or are worn improperly, students are more likely to be quarantined.
How does vaccination status impact quarantine decisions?
At this time, vaccinated individuals do not have to quarantine, as long as they do not have symptoms. After an exposure, vaccinated individuals must be monitored closely for symptoms.
Unvaccinated individuals who are considered close contacts are required to quarantine after an exposure.
When students are subject to mandatory quarantine or isolation, the following learning support will be provided:
All students will have access to asynchronous instruction via their Google Classrooms (and/or Seesaw for kindergarten). Students should log in to their Google Classroom each day they are out of school to get assignments and directions.
Any additional materials needed for learning will be available for pick up at your child's school. If you unable to pick up necessary materials, please contact the main office of your child's school for assistance.
During quarantine, students should complete assigned work and turn all completed assignments in to their teacher.
Students in grades 7-12 can also access synchronous “check-in” support via Google Meet at designated times during the school day. This check-in will allow students to ask questions and let school staff know what additional assistance they need. Information about how to access this support will be communicated by the junior high or high school staff to students in quarantine and their families.
All students in mandatory quarantine or isolation will be provided additional time to make up assignments, in accordance with our make up policy, once they are able to return to school.
Additional Supports Coming Soon!
We know how important it is to keep students connected to school. We are working on additional supports that will keep all students connected and making progress toward their learning goals if they need to quarantine or isolate due to COVID.
The FCSD is currently recruiting educators to provide "check-in" support during the school day for students in grades K-6.
In addition, FCSD is also recruiting among our current certified teachers to provide additional tutoring after school hours for students in quarantine or isolation. This is an optional support for students, not a requirement.
We will share information with families of quarantined students as soon as it is available so they can access this support.

Return to School Following Illness/Symptoms
Any student with new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19 must stay home from school, regardless of vaccination status. If a student is at school and has symptoms they will be sent home by the nurse.
To return to school, the student must:
have a negative COVID test result, or
remain out of school for a minimum of 10 calendar days from the day symptoms began.
In addition, in order to return to school, symptoms must be improving and the child must be fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours.
If your child has a documented, pre-existing medical condition, with symptoms that are not new or worsening, or a chronic condition or acute illness with symptoms that are unchanged, please consult with the school nurse at your child's school about required documentation. In some very specific cases, alternate documentation can be provided in place of a negative COVID test result.
COVID Testing
The FCSD is working with our local Department of Health and NYS to establish free COVID testing options for students and staff who have been exposed to COVID or are experiencing COVID symptoms, as well as required weekly screening testing for unvaccinated individuals. Please be on the lookout for updates on that process.
COVID Vaccination
Vaccinations are currently available for individuals who are 12 years old or older.
We encourage all eligible members of our school community to get vaccinated to minimize the impact of COVID and help us return to "normal" school operations, unles your health care provider advises otherwise.
Being vaccinated will prevent individuals from being quarantined if they are exposed to COVID, but do not develop any symptoms.
