12.17.2017 | Lisa S. Tsay

FTC Team 10309 TechnoHuskies competed against 96 teams in FIRST Tech Challenge State Championship this past weekend: they took home Rockwell Collins Innovate Award Finalist and will represent State of Michigan, along with other 18 Michigan FTC teams, competing in FIRST FTC Super-Regional held in Iowa, March 15-17, 2018.

TechnoHuskies ranked 9th with 980 qualifying points in the Robot Competition and advanced to QuarterFinal. TechnoHuskies competed in 5 qualifying matches. Their Robot performance on Matches 31 and 39 was as graceful and elegant can be: full points in autonomous mode, 1 row and 2 columns of glyphs (with help of the alliance team), and two upright relics on zone 3, which also earned them 356, highest points. TechnoHuskies were invited to play on the Alliance #6 with Team 9819, RoboRats from Algonac, MI and the GA Bots from Royal Oak, MI. The Alliance did not advance to Semi-Final.

TechnoHuskies performed well in judge’s first and second interviews. Judges awarded TechnoHuskies the Rockwell Innovate Award 2nd place for their innovative and creative Robot design solution to the FIRST Tech Challenge Game, their ingenuity and inventiveness to make their Robot Design come to life and their Engineering Notebook showing how they arrived their design solutions.

“Our team is unique because we are a diverse group. Each and every one of us is unique, our personality, race, and culture are all different. But we work together in harmony and synchronize with each other,” said Margaret.

“I think that our robot is unique because of everything it can do. For example the linear slide is exquisite at grabbing relics (except for some minor malfunctions) and is truly unique because no one else has used the design we used,” said Connor.

“We have learned a lot over the course of the robotics season. We have lost many matches, scrimmages and awards but everyone thinks that we have had a great season as a team so far. We will think of our season as a good one, even if we don't qualify for super-regionals,” said Omer.

“I've learned so much over the past couple months about wiring, finances and more. I would love to win, it would be fun, but, the skills I have learned from FIRST this year will stick with me for a lifetime and help me in many ways,” said Noah B.

“We thought out of the box when we needed to reduce the chance of the ball getting in the way during Autonomous. We took the battery and moved it forward. We thought of many ways and decided on the most logical and easy. We also had many ideas for our linear slide until we thought of the idea to use drawer slides and it works beautifully,” said T. J.
