11th and 12th grade students are eligible to complete Independent Studies and School to Work/Community Service Blocks.
The first step is to determine which type of project you would like to do and complete the necessary paperwork. Forms must be signed and returned to Guidance by the appropriate deadline in order to be approved and added to your schedule.
Fall semester deadline: June 1st
Spring semester deadline: November 1st
Independent Study (IS)
The Independent Study program is designed for students who have specific academic interests that go beyond the standard curriculum or for those who have already completed all available courses in a particular subject and wish to delve deeper into that area of study.
Examples of Independent Study Projects:
Writing a short story
Composing a piece of original music
Learning how to use the 3D Printer
Researching Alzheimers and creating information to share with the community
School to Work/Community Service (SW/SC)
School to Community Service/Work program is designed to provide students with opportunities to gain career relevant work experience. Students should seek a placement that relates to their interests and future career aspirations.
Examples of School to Community Service/Work Placements:
Volunteering at a local elementary school
Working in a local medical office
Assisting in a middle school classroom
Working in Frontier's library
Student Responsibilities
1) Meet with you school counselor to determine eligibility and scheduling.
2) Find placement/supervisor (school to work/community service) OR identify topic and find supervise faculty member (Independent Study).
3) Fill out required form and gather family and supervisor/faculty signatures and return to school counselor.
4) Make a copy of Hours Log Template below and save it to your personal Google Drive. You will use this document to keep track of your hours. It is your responsibility to document your hours. Share the document with your supervisor/advisor.
5) Independent Study Students ONLY: Submit Mid-Term Product (see below)
5) At the end of the semester before your presentation, print out your hours log and have your advisor sign off it
6) Present on your project (school counselors & advisors will communicate your presentation time & location) and turn in signed hours log

Slideshow of your artistic or building process so far and outline for steps to completion
