Value and Contour Line
Value and Contour Line
Activity #1 (5-10 mins)
Use your EPAD worksheets for reference .
Watch the video below before you start your drawing activity. Notice how both artists use the EPAD to create interesting works of art.
Answer these questions with your table or on your own:
Which artist is your favorite? Why?
Compare how the two artists create illusions.
How do they both use implied lines?
How does Riley use contour lines differently from Vasarely?
Identify one element (like line, value, or color) and one principle (like movement, pattern, or contrast) that both artists use to trick your eyes.

Activity #2 (45ish mins)
Now it's your turn!
Instructions:
Prep: Work with your table to gather a pencil, colored pencils (complementary colors), eraser, ruler, circle tracer, and 1/2 sheet of paper (your substitute teacher should have your 1/2 sheet of paper).
Neatly: Put your name and color on the back/bottom of your paper.
Watch: Follow along with the video (below) to create your own optical illusion. (Work together if you need help)
Draw: Use contour lines and value (shading) to create the illusion of movement.
Color: Choose one set of complementary colors to create unity and contrast.
*Pro-Tip: Use your #2 pencil to deepen the value in your shadow around your sphere - it will make your sphere "POP!"
Finish: Store your work in your folder and check for missing assignments. Finished early? Make your own op art drawing on good paper (Look to Riley's art for inspiration!)
Clean-up: Put things back where they belong to make sure the drawing center is neat and tidy before you leave.
