A child can have a severe allergy to any food as well as an intolerance to any food. It is important to discuss the difference between "allergy" and "intolerance." A food intolerance is not life threatening and will not require emergency medication if the student consumes that food. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology addressed the difference between the two in the following publication (click above link to view publication):
If your child has an intolerance or food allergy, please fill out nutrition form so the student will not be permitted to purchase any cafeteria food noted on Form.
If a child no longer has a food allergy, a physician's letter noting the child is no longer allergic is REQUIRED for your child to be permitted to purchase that item.
