The WV Foundation for Rape Information and Services (FRIS), WV's sexual assault coalition, encourages all West Virginians to work together to keep children safe and healthy. WV Rape Crisis Centers are open and serving the needs of communities by providing services and information.
FRIS is committed to providing children, school staff, and parents with information needed to reinforce a zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and neglect in WV. In support of that work, FRIS and Prevention Specialists from the rape crisis centers have developed the West Virginia Statewide Prevention Initiative 2020 to help families manage their emotional responses to everyday events and to be more successful in social interactions through the It's on Us West Virginia Resource Library.
The COVID19 (coronavirus) pandemic dramatically changed our world. It created high stress and uncertainty for students, educators, parents, and the community at large. It increased the risk for child abuse and neglect for some children, especially those at the greatest risk such as an individual with a disability.
Every child deserves to grow up feeling safe and loved. We all play a role in creating safe, stable, and nurturing relationships for West Virginian children. This website provides toolkits for the community, educators, and caregivers. Each toolkit consists of tools and resources to promote child safety.
The key to ending sexual violence is stopping perpetration before it occurs. This approach is known as primary prevention. In WV, there are Prevention Education Specialists at the rape crisis centers who provide school and community programs to address the root causes of violence for youth, college students, and persons with disabilities.

Effective primary prevention programming supports the learning domains of knowing, feeling, and doing. In addition to focusing on content knowledge, there are opportunities to learn and practice skills related to changing attitudes and behaviors.
Prevention programming provides tools and resources to help reduce risk factors while strengthening protective factors in individuals, relationships, communities, and society. This approach is called the “Social Ecological Model.”
