Our librarian, John Scott, served on the 2016 Newbery Committee. As an engaging activity on September 4, he spoke to our students about his experience, the impact on authors' lives from being honored with a Newbery, and, in broad strokes, how the process works. Below are links to the video presentation.
Newbery Presentation Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. Here is a Google Slide of the presentation.
On Friday, we will give an overview of all of the criteria used by the Newbery committe while we teach it through reading Last Stop on Market Street. In addition, while reading One Crazy Summer as a read aloud, we will be discussing and modeling all criteria. The hope is students will begin to evaluate books using the Newbery criteria.
The plan is to directly teach each of the Newbery criteria in more depth so that students will see how to analyze literature through these lenses. To get us started, we will look at how writers' tools were used in Last Stop on Market Street. The tool we will use and introduce this week is #BookSnaps. This will help us "show what we know" with regards to writers' tools.
