Yes! As band directors, we have great working relationships with the Athletics Coaches and extracurricular club/activity sponsors. We want/encourage students to do as much as they can balance. The key to making it all work is student communication. As long as the student learns to communicate with their directors/coaches/sponsors doing multiple activities is encouraged.
From mid-August to early November, band students can generally expect to practice 3-4 days per week, plus a performance and/or a competition. After that, the "outside of school hours" time commitment is minimal, with a weekly sectional and a weekly full band rehearsal being required of all students. Outside of this, the time commitment is minimal with occasional contest, concert, festival or evaluation happening outside of the school day.
YES! If you have one year or more of band experience you are ready to be a member of the Freeman High School Band Program. We have bands that cater to varying abilities and experiences. As band directors, we will help find the ensemble in which you are most likely to thrive in.
Not. At. All. This is a normal feeling, but we provide tremendous support so that every student has the opportunity to learn and grow in marching band. Between our student leaders, our band directors, our clinicians and our marching band staff, we surround our band students with top notch instructors to ensure the transition to marching band is a success. We teach everyone from "step 1", meaning no experience is required.
No. Each semester of Marching Band is counted as a PE credit (0.5). After two semesters of marching band, you have fulfilled your PE requirement.
The audition process is a year round assessment of a student's playing ability, progress, maturity, attitude, leadership and coachability.
To assess playing ability, students participate in an audition process that takes place twice per year, once in December and once in May. The audition includes a prepared etude that the band directors will assess.
No. The State of Texas requires that you participate in both Marching and Concert Band.
Double-reed players typically learn a second instrument to participate in Marching Band. The most common "doubles" are flute, saxophone and percussion, but other instruments are available.
Generally, attendance at all rehearsals, games and performances is mandatory. It is expected that band will be a priority, so please consult the band calendar before scheduling other appointments. If you do have a conflict with any band events, contact the director immediately. Early communication is key.
All fundraisers benefit the entire band. No individual accounts are allowed per IRS rules.
All checks should be made payable to the Freeman High School BBO except for private lessons.
Private lesson checks should be made out to the private lesson teacher.
