In kindergarten, your child will be introduced to 54 "snap" words, as well as, color words, chunks and other frequently used words in writing workshop (play, because, brother, sister, house, friend, etc.). Words are grouped in sets of 2-4. At the beginning of the year, a complete set of words and a binder ring will be sent home with each child. Every couple of weeks, you will receive information on the group of words your child is working on so that you can add to his/her ring accordingly. In school, we review the introduced sight words and chunks often by completing various center activities, singing songs, chanting the spelling/letter pattern, mixing and fixing, etc. Your child's word ring will stay at home for the duration of the school year. Practicing the words and chunks should be part of your child's nightly homework. The goal is for your child to read the word/make the chunk sound in less than three seconds.
Below is a list of suggested activities to reinforce/practice sight word recognition at home:
Word Hunt (Have your child look for the words in magazines, books. newspapers, etc.)
Shaving cream (Have your child write the words/chunks in shaving cream.)
Memory
Type the words
Trace the words
Clap out the letters in each word
