Second Grade

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Second graders use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two- step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions. Students will determine if a number is odd or even and express an even number a sum of two equal addends. Children work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. By the end of grade 2, students know from memory the sums of two single-digit numbers and related differences.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

Second graders understand place value up to 1,000 to read and write numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form and use this meaning of hundreds, tens, and ones to compare two three-digit numbers. Students work throughout the year to add and subtract within 1,000 using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Measurement and Data

Grade 2 students measure and estimate lengths in standard units and select appropriate measuring tools using inches, feet, centimeters and meters. Students also tell and write the time from analogue and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes using a.m. and p.m. and know the relationships of time. Second grade students solve word problems involving coins and bills up to $10. Children represent and interpret data using line plots, picture graphs, and bar graphs with up to four categories.
