First graders use addition and subtraction to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions. Connections among addition and subtraction and applying properties support development of addition and subtraction within 20. First graders work to develop fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
Students understand that in a two-digit number, the two digits represent amounts of tens and ones and use this understanding of place value to compare two two-digit numbers based on the meanings of the tens and ones digits. Students work to mentally find 10 more or 10 less without having to count and explain the reasoning used.
First graders measure objects using non-standard units and can order objects by length. Students tell and write time to the hour and half hour and identify the values of all US coins to solve problems up to 100 cents. Children represent and interpret data to ask and answer questions with up to three categories.
Students in grade 1 build and draw shapes that possess defining attributes. Children compose two and three dimensional shapes to create composite shapes. First graders partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters.
