SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK RELATED SERVICES:
Participating in special education assessment meetings as well as individual Educational Planning Meetings
Working with those problems in a child's living situation that affect the child’s adjustment in school. (home, school, and community)
Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability.
Counseling (group, individual and/or family)
Mobilizing family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program
Assisting in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICES TO STUDENTS:
Providing crisis intervention.
Providing individual and group counseling sessions utilizing evidence informed best practices.
Developing intervention strategies to increase academic, social, and emotional success.
Assisting with conflict resolution, anger management, social skill development, and self esteem.
Assisting students in understanding and accepting self and others.
Assisting with restorative work, conversations, and mediations.
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICES TO CAREGIVERS/FAMILIES:
Collaborating with caregivers to facilitate support for their children's school adjustment.
Alleviating family stress to enable the child to function more effectively in school &community.
Provide support to students and caregivers who have experienced trauma, abuse, violence, or loss
Assisting caregivers to access programs available to students with special needs.
Assisting caregivers in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
Conduct home visits to support students and their families with school anxiety, school avoidance, and other school/home concerns
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICES TO SCHOOL PERSONNEL:
Providing staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior.
Developing staff in-service training programs.
Providing direct support to staff.
Support General Education and IEP teams in identifying positive behavior supports and implementing behavior plans
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICES TO DISTRICTS:
Providing consultation regarding school law and school policy including but not limited to IDEA and Section 504.
Providing wrap around case management for students and families requiring multiple resources.
Developing alternative programs for students with mental health concerns, substance use concerns, attendance concerns or involvement with the law.
Developing and implementing programming to ensure student safety.
Identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.
Assist in developing and implementing educational programs for exceptional children.
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKERS ARE SCHOOL-COMMUNITY LIAISONS:
Obtaining and coordinating community resources to meet students' needs.
Helping school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
Advocating for new and improved community/school service to meet the needs of students and families.
Helping the systems respond effectively to each child's needs.
