Newsletter - 23rd May 2025
The Summer Term has begun with our Brilliant Beginnings to launch our third (and final!) projects for the year. Although it has been a very short half term, there has been a lot going on here at FPIS as the children continue to immerse themselves in their learning with continued passion and enthusiasm.
We have had a particular focus upon learning about how to keep ourselves safe in the sun during our assemblies this term. The children have been using the 5 S's - Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide, Shade, to help them remember what they need to do when the Ultra Violet (UV) levels are moderate and high. We are monitoring the levels each day in class to make sure we are all protecting ourselves accordingly.
As mentioned in my recent letter, parental support plays a vital role in our efforts to implement effective sun safe practice in school. Therefore, please remember to ensure that your child has a suitable sun hat and sunscreen, both of which are clearly labelled, in school every day. Sunglasses may also be bought to school - please label, if possible. Thank you in advance for your support.
Whilst at the moment the forecast for our half term holiday is not looking particularly sunny at the moment, I hope you have a lovely break - whatever the weather brings!
With very best wishes
Jane Indge
Head of School

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be spending his half term holiday in Oak Class as they had the highest attendance overall, with an impressive figure of 99.7%! Well done everyone!
Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%

The Department for Education has published a child-friendly version of Working Together to Safeguard Children, including a downloadable booklet and animation to help young people understand safeguarding processes.
The guide, titled A Guide to Safeguarding for Children and Young People, explains how professionals like social workers, teachers, doctors, and police collaborate to keep children safe. It encourages children to speak up and reassures them that help is available.
This guide responds to calls for greater inclusion of children’s voices in safeguarding. Access these child-friendly resources here:

There was a sea of red, white and blue across the whole school for our recent VE day celebrations with flags, bunting and carefully coordinated outfits.
The children enjoyed their picnic lunch in the woodland and later the whole school came together for a special VE day assembly.
On Thursday 22nd May, our school celebrated all things poetry themed! The theme for World Poetry Day this year is "Poetry: A bridge between Peace and Inclusion."
Each class moved around nine different stations all celebrating inclusivity, exploring emotions and things we can do to feel calm and at peace. At each station had an activity and a poem related to that. Stations included: spending some time with Lilly and Poppy, using our sense in nature to help us feel calm, hiding in a den, drawing rainbows and exploring our neurodiversity umbrellas in more detail.
Once the children had travelled around all nine stations they went back to their classrooms to listen to the poems again and then became illustrators! Each poem has now been illustrated by each class and the Poetry Book stands pride of place in each classrooms reading area.
Joe Wicks has been on a mission to get more children moving and that's why we were so excited to take part in the TSC Mini London Marathon in Schools.
For a few weeks, our children were busy training at home and at school in preparation for the main event. During this time, we learnt all about the London Marathon to inspire them to take part in our own mini marathon.
Starting on the 22nd April our children took part in a 10-minute run, jog, skip or hop everyday. It was amazing to watch their determination, resilience and stamina increase everyday. On Friday 2nd May we went out on to the Junior School Field and took part in our last laps of our mini marathon event. Everyone had their own number and there was even a finish line! Each year group had other children cheering them on and the atmosphere was electric!
We were so proud of all of the children, and they were certainly proud of themselves too!
Thanks to Mrs Swaffield for organising the event!
All of the children (and grown ups too) enjoyed our sunny Brilliant Beginning, which was a journey to Oaken Grove park! We discussed how we were going to get there and talked about being safe on our journey. Mr Dearnaley ensured that we were extra safe when crossing the road by being our lollipop man and stopping oncoming cars. The children made full use of the park once we had arrived and it was wonderful to see so many of our children's grown-up's come along on our journey too - thank you for coming! The children thoroughly enjoyed their first school trip and are excited for their next one!
Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been super busy since returning from their Easter holidays! We launched our new project on Journeys and the children were excited to share all the journeys that they had been on during the Easter break! Our Early Years explored a range of maps and discovered why they might be helpful. Following this the children also walked around our school grounds using maps of the school to help them on their journey. Once the children had returned back to their classroom they 'had a go' at designing their own map. They drew parts of the school that they had noticed such as the log park, pond, woodlands and more! We used directional language and our senses as we travelled around. Many of the children were inspired by the different map's in our classroom and chose to create another one during busy learning.
Our Bumblebee's, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been making good use of our planting area outdoors (and the sunshine!) The children have prepared the growing beds and planted a variety of vegetable seeds in pots. Our Early Years have been caring for them in their own gardens and when they are ready the children will re-plant the vegetables in our growing area where they can continue to grow until they are ready to eat!
In maths with have been using our subitising and composition knowledge to make '5 and a bit'. The children have been making links and using different representations to explore the composition of numbers to 10. During Marvellous Maths they have enjoyed exploring money through role play shops in their classrooms. We have also explored positional language, maps and following a route around the classroom.
This week we began retelling the Gingerbread Man traditional tale through actions and words. We linked the Gingerbread Man story to our project 'Journeys' and the children created their own story maps to help them retell the story in sequence. We have also revisited our mathematical learning on weight and have created our own delicious gingerbread biscuits which the children took home!
Our Early Years children took part in a painting workshop with Amanda from Norden Farm Arts Centre. The workshop, Our Town Map, helped us to launch our Summer Term project on Journeys. The children worked collectively using colour and shape to produce Bumblebee, Caterpillar and Dragonfly Towns. They were extremely proud of their creations and are looking forward to sharing them in our Early Years Exhibition next term.
On Thursday 15th May our Early Years children went on a school trip to Windsor as part of their learning this term about 'Journeys'. To prepare for the journey our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies learnt about landmarks in our local area, map reading and different ways to travel. We started our journey at school and boarded a coach with maps of the local area. The coach then took us on a journey around Maidenhead and we spotted local landmarks before travelling on to Windsor. We walked across Alexander Park and boarded our boat. Captain Jack took us on a trip down the Thames before returning to our starting point for lunch. The children excitedly talked about the places that they recognised and everyone had a fantastic day. Thank you to all the adults that helped make the day a success and our brilliant Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies who were all fantastic role models for our school.
What a way to begin our new project, We’re Going on an Adventure! by learning so much from our friends about the different places, towns, cities or countries that they had visited or were special to them! We learnt about a huge variety of places! It was wonderful to see and hear the children speak so passionately about their chosen place. Thank you to everyone who spent time preparing the objects, outfits, posters and also for discussing your children’s ideas with them!
As part of our new project we travelled around the world to visit South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand, Pakistan, Canada and France. We recalled key facts from each place and boarded planes to reach our destinations. We investigated some of the main physical features, languages, weather and animals found in each of the countries. We have also been learning about the continents of the world and looking at their similarities and differences.
During our maths sessions our drip feed has been to recognise the UK coins and notes. We have also been working on the beginnings of multiplication and division by counting in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s, grouping objects into equal groups and drawing arrays. These concepts fit in with the big idea of unitising: counting in steps of equal sizes and treating a group of, say, five objects as one unit of five. We have also just started having ‘Fun with Fractions!’, learning all about halves and quarters of objects, shapes and quantities. We have proved that two equal parts make a whole (halves) and four equal parts make a whole (quarters) and shown our understanding in different ways.
In outdoor learning we have enjoyed some improved weather! We have been enjoying cloud watching, bug hunting, creating observational drawings of the pond and its surroundings, playing parachute games as well as quietly reading books listening to the bird song.
We have been thinking about how technology is integral to the supply of our food as it is grown and transported from all over the world. We enjoyed guessing where different fruits had come from and learning where they had travelled from. We have also been busy applying our Sticky Knowledge of primary and secondary colours to designing and painting our own flags.
We have learnt about five groups of animals: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles and thought about the special characteristics that enable them to be classified in one of the groups. We have also been thinking about the way that animals adapt to their environment, such as the symbiotic relationship between clown fish and sea anemones and how different types of frog are either brightly coloured to warn off predators or how they can camouflage into their surroundings.
We have also been enjoying learning about Judaism in RE and we have been learning about the importance of Shabbat. Miss Dexter came to tell us more about this and even bought in some Challah bread for us to try!
We have had an exciting start to our project 'Wonderful Water!' which we launched with our Brilliant Beginning. We called this our Water Creative Day and enjoyed two creative activities. We explored Hokusai and recreated our versions of his artwork The Great Wave and also created our own class collages of the ocean, thinking about the different marine animals who use the Pacific ocean as their habitat.
Continuing with the artistic theme we have also been exploring the work of J.M.W Turner and paying particular attention to his use of watercolour paints. We have been experimenting different techniques we can use to help us in creating our own piece of artwork. We were also very excited to link this to our maths learning of money as we found Turner on the back of a £20 note!
Following our exploration into J.M.W. Turner's technique and paintings and our research into the five layers of the ocean, we have created our own ocean themed artwork and we have also painted each layer of the ocean. We have thought carefully about the creatures that live in the ocean and represented them in our paintings.
We have also been busy learning about the five different oceans and the different layers of the ocean, creating our own information sheets with illustrations to show what we have found out. We have been using information books, iPads and globes to further our research skills.
Plastic Pollution has also been a theme we are beginning to investigate, thinking about the impact of this on our oceans, humans, and animals. We have been taking part in our own rescue missions using tweezers and a water tray in our classrooms!
In RE this term we have been focusing on the religion Islam in our RE lessons and Mrs Akhter kindly led an assembly on wudu to help us think about how Muslims most feel like they belong.
Finally, as mathematicians we have been busy exploring fractions and learning that fractions can be fun! :-)
Our School Council are so excited to share that The Big Chick Knit raised an amazing £15,158! It was so lovey being a part of such a great cause for the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice and we certainly had lots of fun collecting and selling chocolate chicks and bunnies to everyone! Thank you to everyone who donated!
This month, the Eco Club was thrilled to see just how well our winter wheat is continuing to grow! With the longer, sunnier days and warmer temperatures, our crop is absolutely flourishing. it’s been so rewarding to watch them develop week by week. We can’t wait to see how they continue to grow as summer approaches!
We’re excited to share that we’ve been given a brand-new area of the school grounds to care for—and we already have lots of ideas! We plan to revamp the bug hotels with fresh natural materials, add bird feeders to welcome our feathered friends, and plant bright, pollinator-friendly flowers to attract bees and butterflies.
It’s a lovely space with great potential, and we can’t wait to turn it into a vibrant haven for wildlife. Stay tuned as we bring this special corner of the school to life!
In nurture, the children have had a great start to the summer term. We have been experimenting with water and colour this term. We got 5 pots of water all with different food colouring in and dipped tissue in to see the colours mix. We conducted a dissolve/not dissolve experiment by adding different things to water like salt, sugar, oil, coffee and flour and predicting if they would dissolve or not. Next we experimented by placing different objects like a spoon, crayon, lolly stick, marble and Lego into water to see if they would float or sink. Finally, using skittles we made patterns on plates and added water, it was great seeing the different colours form as the water touch them.
As the sun has been shining we have spent lots more time outside. We walked around the playground, looking for items on our scavenger hunt sheet, ticking them off as we saw them. We have been planting flowers, peas and a courgette, which we have had to water daily. Our strawberry plants that were planted a few years ago have given us lots of strawberries to enjoy this year. We also planted cress seeds and made cress heads which we were also able to taste, before taking home.
We have been delighted to welcome a new group of children to our FS sessions on a Wednesday afternoon. Everyone has settled in brilliantly and we have been continuing our work to further develop habitats for wildlife living in and around our school grounds.
The children have been using the hand and palm drills to make different sized holes in the end of a log to make a 'Bee Stump'. Once finished, the stump will be positioned in a quiet, sunny spot in our grounds to encourage bees to nest.
We have also introduced a hedgehog house to the wild area at the back of the woodland, providing a warm and snug place for hibernation over the winter months.
We continued with the hedgehog theme last week, beginning to use our woodworking skills to create our own 'hedge-logs!' So far, the children have used the bow saw to cut a log disc for their hedge-logs body and used the palm drill to bore holes for the eyes and nose.
We love finding out about and celebrating our children's achievements outside of school!
If your child has an achievement that they are very proud of and would like to share with us all, they will get the opportunity to do so during our Celebration Assembly on a Friday.
