Newsletter - 20th December 2024
Our last few weeks this term have been filled with Christmas events and celebrations, which you can read all about below. This time of year is so magical for our young children and it is so lovely to be part of all their excitement and wonder. During the lead up to the festive period our children have participated in some very exciting and memorable experiences in school. They have worked together to master new songs, actions and words for performances, been busy learning and have had lots of fun too.
A big thank you to Mr Thompson for welcoming everyone into school this morning with a selection of Christmas songs played on his cornet. We were also lucky enough to have an encore at the end of our special assembly this morning.
Thank you for your help and support in making this term such a successful and happy one for our children. We are very proud of how hard they have worked and how much they have achieved so far. We are all excited to see what 2025 brings!
On behalf of the staff team, a huge thank you also to you all for your kind words, Christmas cards and gifts. They have been much appreicated by us all.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to welcoming our children and families back to school in the New Year!
With very best wishes
Jane Indge
Head of School
At the end of this term we have enjoyed; an epic Christmas Fair (thank you FPSA and volunteers), three pantos, seven Nativities, six fabulously decorated trees, two guitar concerts, two Christmas lunches, two choirs (including a brand new FPIS choir!) numerous festive assemblies, Christmas Jumper day, staff 'singing' carols on the playground, Carol Concerts, 90 Early Years children singing Christmas songs, a visit from Father Christmas and Christmas jumpers and adornments galore. I am not sure even the great Father Christmas has as much festive fun leading up to Christmas Day!
That is just some of the recent events at Furze Platt Primary Federation in our lead up to the Winter Holiday. It has been another action-packed term with so many events, activities and trips packed in for the children to enjoy and be immersed in. I look back over the past 2 terms with immense pride and joy. The children have achieved so much and their passion for learning is evident in the amazing work that they have produced and learning that they have shown.
With all that in mind, I do want to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff. Our children get an amazing time at both FPIS and FPJS and the staff do all that they can to make each and every child's time here a perfect mix of striving for academic excellence alongside a nurturing environment to help support our children to flourish in many different ways. Thank you to all the staff who make both schools amazing places to work and to learn.
That just leaves me to wish you all a relaxing, enjoyable and safe break and I look forward to seeing you in the new year.
Thank you all for supporting our schools and a Merry Christmas everyone!
Mike Wallace
Executive Headteacher

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be spending the Christmas break in Dragonfly Class who had an fantastic overall attendance figure of 98.7%! Well done!

Last Friday our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies performed their Christmas concert to their parents, carers and lots of grandparents too! They looked adorable dressed as Christmas trees, Snowmen and Reindeers which they had created for the show. The children entertained us all with their big, brave singing voices and lovely dances! It was so lovely to see how confident our Early Years children have become already!
Well done Early Years, you put on a fabulous show and we are all incredibly proud of you!
On the 28th of November we were excited to welcome our Early Years parents and carers to our Christmas Workshop and Busy Learning afternoon. Following an 'Early Reading, Writing and Phonics' presentation in the hall our parents joined their children in their classrooms to make Christmas decorations. Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies threaded beads onto pipe cleaners to make candy cane decoration for the school Christmas tree and they decorated a bauble too! Thank you to all that attended, it was a great start to our Christmas celebrations.
Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been super busy having lots of fun with their learning linked to their project, 'Me and My Family.'
Following our visit from Dr Irvine who talked to the children about staying healthy and why we might visit the doctors, the children have explored the question, How do we keep our bodies healthy? They learnt about the importance of sleep, rest, exercise, drinking plenty of water and eating healthy food. They helped to sort real food that we should eat regularly and food that we should have occasionally as well as creating some tasty fruit/vegetable kebabs. Some children even challenged themselves to make an ABC/ABAB pattern using the fruit and vegetables.
The children have been illustrators, writing story maps of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. First they explored the props linked to the story such as dry/wet oats, small, middle and big spoons/bowls and chairs! The children used language linked to this story and then had a go at writing their own story maps which had arrows showing the beginning, middle and end.
The children had the opportunity to decorate the school Christmas tree with the decorations they made during their busy learning session. We encouraged the children to space the decorations out evenly across the tree. They have loved admiring the Christmas tree when going into the hall and are proud of their efforts. In addition, each class had a go at creating paperchains for our class Christmas trees. The children had great fun!
We are looking forward to starting our new project 'All About Animals' next year! To launch our next Project we are asking our Early Years children to dress up as their favourite animal on Monday 20th January! We will send a reminder sooner to the time.
To end our Autumn term project 'Super-Duper Heroes!' the Year 1 children visited Windsor Castle!
We had a fun-filled day of activities which included: visiting St. George's Chapel, looking at the Guards that were stood on duty and watching them change, marching like soldiers around Windsor Castle and visiting the State Apartments.
Each class also took part in an 'All about Castles' workshop where we learnt about the history of Windsor Castle starting all the way back to when it was first built nearly 1000 years ago! We got to learn about how and why castles were built and the important defence systems around the castle too.
Year 1 had an amazing trip, and it was a wonderful way to finish our project and consolidate everything we had learnt about Windsor Castle and the Royal Family.
Year 1 were extremely lucky to have a visit from GDSM Indge! George is a Grenadier Guard and knew Year 1 had been learning all about the role of a guard, so he decided to pop in to FPIS and speak to us about his duties! He brought in his spectacular uniform for us to look at and even his super shiny boots (which he told us he cleans for up to 2 hours to give them that shine!). GDSM Indge told us all about his role and how he trained to have such an important job. We were all so fascinated by his stories and he answered lots of our questions so we could learn even more! Thank you GDSM Indge, we loved having you visit us!
We are all extremely proud of the Key Stage One Children who performed not once but four times!
Our play this year was titled: 'There's a Miracle in Town' and they certainly did a fantastic job!
The year 1 children performed their songs and actions beautifully and the year 2 children learnt their lines and performed with passion and bravery.
A big shout out to all of the KS1 staff who helped to put on such a super show!
Didn't they all do well?! Thank you to everyone who came to watch us and support us.
The children had a lovely Christmas Lunch with their friends this week. As a very special treat, all the staff helped to serve the children - and everyone enjoyed a jolly sing-a-long to the Christmas songs that were playing!
On Thursday morning, we were able to join a live broadcast from the North Pole and listen to Santa read a festive tale: 'Twas the Night before Christmas'. We had to shout really loud as he was fast asleep in the North Pole. He is obviously so tired after all it is his busiest time of the year! We also got to sing some songs to him too.
We were very pleased to welcome back Wayne Dixon and Beth Gomm from Christian Connections in Schools (CCiS) for a special assembly on Thursday. We talked about the things that help us have a perfect Christmas and also learnt about the importance of Christmas for Christians.
During our Whole School Assembly on Wednesday everyone was surprised and thrilled to see Father Christmas, who arrived with presents for all of the children. He also had his 'good' list to hand - which he revealed had a number of staff names on it (much to their delight/relief!!) After praising our children for all their hard work this term, Father Christmas was also keen to check that there would be carrots left out on Christmas Eve for Rudolph (as well as something nice to eat for himself as well!) Just before he left, the children delighted Father Christmas by singing 'A Miracle in Town' and 'We wish you a Merry Christmas' from their recent performances. What a very special moment for all!
Our thanks to Mr Wratten (husband of Mrs Wratten, our FPPF Business Manager), the FPSA and both Mr Dearnaley and Mr Dearnaley for their help with this event.
Our newly-formed FPIS choir put on an impromptu festive performance during their rehearsals this week. Mr Wallace, Miss Dexter and Mrs Indge were so pleased to listen to the children sing the songs with such passion and enthusiasm. Our thanks to Miss Mahoney for organising and leading the choir this term. We are excited to see how our choir progresses over the rest of this year!
It was a pleasure, as always, to welcome Mr Hastings and the FPJS guitarists for a very special festive concert last Friday. The junior school children played a wonderful selection of Christmassy tunes and we all thoroughly enjoyed their performance.
We were very proud to wear our festive jumpers last Friday to support Save the Children once again. Our Christmas Jumper Day 2024 has already raised £511 across both schools!
A huge thank you to all those who have helped us to raise this impressive amount - and if you haven't had a chance to make a donation yet, our fundraising page is still available:
https://christmas.savethechildren.org.uk/fundraising/cjd240001135
The Royal British Legion have recently been in touch to let us know how much we raised for the Poppy Appeal last month - and the grand total was a tremendous £301.31!
Thank you to everyone who help raised this sum of money. We are extremely proud to support this charity each year which will help them continue their vital welfare and benevolent work.
We cannot believe that it is the end of our first term as Eco representatives! We have got so many ideas on how we want to look after our school environment next year. One of the first things we will do in January is to think about our carbon footprint and how we can reduce it! If you have any ideas, then please let your class representative know!
We were excited to go outside and check how our wheat is getting on. We are pleased to say that our bed in the Year 1 growing area has done really well and when we measured the lengths of the shoots some had reached 21cm! We can't wait to see their progress after the break!
Top Eco Tip: Over the Christmas break, walk around your local area and see if you can spot any birds' nests hidden in the trees! Here is one that the Eco Club found on our school grounds! Can you spot where it is?
In nurture, we have been busy adding snowmen, holly and robins to our new winter board and putting up winter themed paper chains.
In the penultimate week of term, we had a few treats serving up hot chocolate and popcorn whilst watching a movie (either Inside Out 2 or Happy Feet 2, both fabulous films). We have also had great fun making reindeer food, to take home and sprinkle on Christmas Eve and in our last week we planted some daffodil bulbs into the planters outside Holly classroom and the ones round the amphitheatre.
We have had an amazing autumn term in Nurture and are looking forward to seeing what lovely activities we have planned when we return in January!
From all the Nurture team, we wish all our children and their families a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2025!
The children have enjoyed our Forest School sessions this term as we have continued to establish our FS responsibilities and explore the environment all around.
The children have had the opportunity to make their own Christmas Tree using natural materials found in the woodland area. As the weather has become colder recently, hot chocolate whilst sitting around Base Camp has been very much appreciated too!
We love finding out about and celebrating our children's achievements outside of school!
If your child has an achievement that they are very proud of and would like to share with us all, they will get the opportunity to do so during our Celebration Assembly on a Friday.

Christmas Fair
Our annual Christmas Fair was back on Saturday the 30th November and both schools were busy with lots of families attending. Entertainment was provided from the Junior School choir singing carols in the Infants shelter before the fair opened and from St Sebastian Wokingham brass band who played carols next to the Infants hall.
The FPSA would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who helped set up the fair, ran a stall for 1 hour (or more!) and cleared up at the end. Overall the fair has raised around £7,500 profit which is fantastic.
The giant doggy (called Terry!) was won by Alex from year 2 and the 100 Board was won by Mohsin in year 5.

NHS Pharmacy First Service
Did you know that the NHS Pharmacy First Service enables children and adults to get convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment where appropriate, for seven common conditions without the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment? Accessing the service may mean that we can help children feel better and get back to school as quickly as possible, as well as supporting parents/carers to also get better if they are unwell with one of the conditions covered under the service.
There is no need to make an appointment; parents or carers can pop into their local Boots pharmacy with their child and ask for help under the service.
Support for some common conditions can be accessed under the service, free of charge (unless NHS prescription charges apply):
A summary of the service is available as an animation and more information can also be found at nhs.uk/thinkpharmacyfirst as well as at https://www.boots.com/healthhub/a-z-services/pharmacy-first.
