Newsletter - 14th March 2025
We have certainly been very busy learning during the last few weeks - both in and outside of school. Our Year 2 children were excellent ambassadors for our school on their recent visits to London, We were proud to recieve such positive comments from staff and members of the public at both venues regarding our children's conduct (as well as their passion for learning!) Well done to everyone - and thank you to the Year 2 staff team and our volunteers for making this experience such a successful one.
Whilst our Year 1 and Early Years children haven't been out and about, they have thoroughly enjoyed the Florence Nightingale/Mary Seacole Workshop sessions and the mobile farm visit respectively. Both of these opportunities really did help bring the learning to life for our young children - and were lots of fun too.
Read on to found out more about all these events...
We were extremely pleased and very excited to welcome back Jump Start Jonny to our school this week. JSJ's infectious enthusiasm and energy led to some very full-on physical workouts and lots of WHOOPA's, of course! You can see more about JSJ's visit below :)
Following the recent construction of the goat paddock just inside our main entrance gate, we have been delighted to see the arrival of pygmy goats Poppy and Lily - our newest members of our FPPF family! We will be letting Poppy and Lily settle in over the next few weeks and are looking forward to learning about and taking care of them.
Booking for our Spring Term Parents' Meetings opens this afternoon, so please do make an appointment to speak to your child's class teacher about their progress, achievements and next steps. We really do value the opportunity to share these things with you. If there is anything in particular you would like to discuss, you can make your child's teacher aware in advance by adding a comment/question when you make your booking.
Have a lovely weekend!
With very best wishes
Jane Indge

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be visiting Beech Class next week as they had the highest attendance overall, with a figure of 99.3%! Well done everyone!
Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%
You can read our full Attendance Policy here.
Beech 99.3%
Holly 98.7%
Caterpillar 98.3%
Willow 97.9%
Bumblebee 97.4%
Silver Birch 97.3%
Oak 96.8%
Hazel 95.7%
Dragonfly 94.3%
Jump Start Jonny gave us all an experience to remember this week when he bought his JSJ 2025 Tour to our school. It was incredible for our children to interact and join in with JSJ in real life (rather than him being on our screens in class as he is on an ordinary school day!)
All of the children - and staff, were in awe as JSJ jumped, leapt and WHOOPA-ED his way through his action-packed and very funny routines. The whole school was literally buzzing with energy and full of smiles and laughter.
Thank you and well done also to Miss Evmorfopfoulos, Miss Midaoui, Miss Aggarwal, Miss Reike, Miss Dexter and Mrs Indge for participating so enthusiastically in a VERY silly JSJ challenge too! The children all found it hilarious! :)
Lily and Poppy are twin sister pygmy goats and we have leased them from the Bucks Goat Centre.
The Bucks Goat Centre works closely with schools and other establishments/events and our two new arrivals are both experienced at being around a new environment, children and adults alike. The staff from the centre have worked with us to set up suitable pens and provided training for on how to care for the goats. During the summer holiday and selective other holidays, the goats will be going back to the centre to ensure that they have the interaction and care they need when school is closed for a long time.
As a federation of schools, we look for ways in which we can enrich our children’s lives. Animals can be a calming influence on humans but they also can be an important life lesson; learning how to care for an animal and provide all it needs to be happy and safe.
Both goats have settled into their night-time enclosure at FPJS incredibly well and they are already feeding from hand and wanting attention. We are really looking forward to seeing Poppy and Lily in their day-time enclosure at FPIS next week!

We have had a busy and exciting time celebrating World Book Day in school today. Our children (and grown ups!) looked fantastic in their outfits and everyone enjoyed our WBD Costume Parade in the school hall this morning.
This morning, our Year 2 children visited Year 3 at FPJS where they had a great time listening to stories and sharing their favourite books.
We were also very pleased to welcome some of our FPJS Year 6 children to Early Years this morning. The older children bought books to share with our little ones, which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy! This session was the first of what will be regular weekly visits to Early Years by our Year 6 children, which we are all very excited about!
In Year 1, each class had a special visit from Mr Dearnaley, Mr Thompson and Mr Wallace this afternoon, who each bought along one of their favourite books to share with the children.
Thank you to all those who have already purchased books from our Amazon wish list or made a donation via Scopay. If you haven't had a chance to do so yet, you can access our Amazon wish list via the link below:

Thank you!
Our Early Years children were absolutely thrilled to welcome the Year 6's into their classrooms and gardens on World Book Day to share a love for reading! The Bumblebee, Caterpillar, and Dragonfly children got comfy and showed off their very best listening skills as the Year 6's read them a variety of books, including the books the Early Years children have bought from home.
It was truly heartwarming to see some of our confident Early Years readers take the opportunity to read their own books back to the Year 6's! What a fantastic way to celebrate the joy of reading together! Thank you to the Year 6's at FPJS!
On February 28th March, Silver Birch Class had an exciting and action-packed day at the Big Active 60 Festival, held at Braywick Leisure Centre! The festival encouraged children to stay active, have fun and try out a range of different sports. From cycling, to football, archery and cup-stacking, there was something for everyone!
Our class moved through each station, giving their best effort and cheering each other on every step of the way! It was amazing to see their great work and enthusiasm as they learned new skills. It was an incredible opportunity for the children and they thoroughly enjoyed it!
We have launched our Early Years Mastering Number Parent Project. This exciting project shares some of the resources and learning that we will be doing in school and provides parents and carers with some fun games that they can use to support their child at home. It was fantastic to welcome so many parents and carers, giving them the opportunity to learn how to play the games with the children, whilst having fun with maths!
We have also provided every child with coloured counters to use at home during the project to support their learning. Please can we have the counters back after Easter to use with the next year group. Keep sharing your maths home learning with us on SeeSaw! :-)
Our Early Years children were filled with excitement as they welcomed the farm (and the sunshine - yay) last Wednesday! Farmer Danielle and Farmer Angie returned again this year, bringing a wonderful selection of gorgeous and friendly animals, including goats, lambs, ducks, hens, guinea pigs, mice, and even a super cute six-week-old calf who didn't yet have a name!
A firm favourite was Tricksy, the escaping goat, who had everyone giggling with her cheeky antics! The children had an amazing time stroking, holding, and learning about the animals. Some of the children had a go at brushing the pony and feeding the lambs.
Farmer Danielle was full of praise for our children, saying they were impeccably behaved, listened beautifully, and were an absolute joy to share the animals with! We couldn’t be prouder of them all, well done Early Years!
Our Early Years children have been engaged in a variety of exciting learning experiences over the past few weeks! In RE, they explored Shrove Tuesday and Lent, discovering the tradition of making and eating pancakes. The children created a tally chart to predict their favourite toppings before making and tasting their own delicious pancakes. They then wrote fantastic sentences describing their pancake-making experience and their favourite topping!
The children have also been learning about Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist famous for her use of polka dots. Inspired by her artwork, they created their own masterpieces using cotton buds, bottle lids, and other circular objects found in the classroom. After discussing how famous artists sign their work, they proudly added their own signatures to their creations.
We were incredibly grateful to Mrs Bi, who went above and beyond to teach the children about Ramadan and Eid. She shared stories, photographs of her beautifully decorated table, and answered the children’s thoughtful and respectful questions. She also brought in different prayer mats, explaining their significance and how they are used, some children had a go on the prayer mat. The children were fascinated to learn about the delicious foods enjoyed during Eid, and they even had the chance to taste dates! It was wonderful to hear some of the children's own Ramadan and Eid experiences and to see them showing respect and interest in one another’s traditions.
This week, we began learning the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen. The children explored different versions of the story and enjoyed retelling it using props and small-world resources in preparation for next week’s oral storytelling. They also investigated different types of bread and even made their own! Through this activity, they learned about where ingredients come from, how bread is made, and the importance of weighing when cooking. In Maths, they expanded their weighing skills in other fun ways, including weighing themselves on giant balance scales!
Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars, and Dragonflies have been learning all about Spring and new life. We all went on a nature walk around the school grounds, looking for signs of spring. However, we have agreed that the weather just can’t seem to make up its mind yet!
It has been a fantastic few weeks of learning, exploration, and creativity in Early Years, and we look forward to some more busy learning!
Last week Year 1 participated in an exciting history workshop about the lives of two very important nurses, Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The children LOVED dressing up and role playing, bringing to life their Sticky Knowledge about these two very important people from the nineteenth century and why they are remembered today. Everyone got involved and had a part to play and the children learnt so much!
Year 1 have had a busy and exciting few weeks back in School this term! In science we have been investigating, drawing and labelling the different parts of a plant we can see. We have also planted seeds and are carefully ensuring they have everything they need to grow in the hope that they might begin to germinate! We have also been labelling the parts of the body such as head, fingers and feet. We had fun lying on the floor in different positions and asking our partner to instruct us in a particular pose, which we then described. We also explored how our bodies change after exercise and recorded our results, including our heart rate.
In geography we have been focusing on the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. We have used aerial maps to find and label each one which produced some interesting discussions. We have also been applying directional language to navigate our way around school using a compass and learnt about the first four points on a compass: north, south, east and west. We really enjoyed learning how to use this new equipment!
In keeping with the United Kingdom theme we have also been investigating traditional music from each country of the UK and have so far experienced jolly Morris music, a passionate Welsh Male Voice Choir and the powerful and uplifting Bagpipes. We drew pictures and wrote adjectives about how each piece of music made us feel.
Following on from Beech's brilliant dance at the recent Dance Festival, Oak and Silver Birch are participating in a weekly dance workshop led by Mrs Douglass from the Schools Sport Partnership, based on Florence Nightingale. They are having a wonderful time telling Florence's story through the medium of dance.
In our Mastering Number sessions we have been investigating odd and even numbers and what to expect when adding 2 to odd or even number. We have also been making up our own 'First, Then and Now' stories. In maths we have been working systematically applying our knowledge of number bonds up to 10 and extending them to 20, for example, "If I know 5 + 3 = 8 then I know 15 + 3 = 18". We have also been focusing on fact families, using part-whole models to help us with our addition and subtraction number facts.
As well as our terrific class trips to London we have been extremely busy using our creative skills in lots of different ways to support our learning about The Great Fire of London. We had two exciting events: 1666 Creative Day and our 1666 Dress up Day.
During these specials days and throughout our Busy Learning time we have created a skyline of London, inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We also created individual houses to make Pudding Lane and watched in disbelief as it burnt to the ground (on the playground) in about seven minutes!!
We have also been scientists, investigating which materials are waterproof and which are not. In recent years we have all become more aware of the importance of washing our hands. We took part in an experiment to prove this by using environmentally friendly, biodegradable glitter to show how germs are passed on by touch. We discussed the fact that we have both good and bad germs but that by washing our hands we can get rid of most germs.
We have also been busy exploring our History Sticky Knowledge thinking all about chronology. To help us explore this further the teachers brought in baby photos of themselves, their first toys and books and the children had to explore the primary sources carefully for evidence to help them order the items chronologically.
We have also been learning about hygiene issues in 1666 and what people did to try and prevent the smell! We have been exploring the use of scent bags and have been practising our sewing techniques in preperation for making our own scent bags next week. Watch this space!
During our trips to London we learnt all about the Ship's Biscuits which Thomas Farriner would have baked for the Navy. We decided that it would be worth us trying some of these ourselves! We used an authentic recipe and everyone got to try one. We had mixed reviews but lots of people decided that they were tastier than they expected them to be!
In Maths we have imagained ourselves fleeing from The Great Fire crossing The River Thames in boats, using our knowledge of arrays and multiplication facts to help us. We have also been investigating how to measure length and height in centimetres accurately. We have learnt that it is very important to start measuring the object from the start point by ensuring that the 0 on the ruler is placed there.
Over the last two weeks each of our Year 2 classes spent an exciting day in London! Hazel class were first up and started their trip at St. Paul's Cathedral and finihed their trip at Tower Bridge. Holly and Willow started their trips at Tower Bridge and ended their day at St. Paul's Cathedral.
We travelled up to London by coach, looking at famous landmarks along the way out of the window. First, we explored Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral. We listened to our guide as they explained what happened to the cathedral during The Great Fire of London, what survived and how it was rebuilt after the fire. We walked around the cathedral looking at the amazing sculptures, memorials and mosaics. We had a chance to role-play how the fire was fought and sat down right under the dome on the floor looking upwards. We also got to lie down looking up at the ceiling of the dome, focusing on the incredible artworks. It was a really special experience.
We then walked through the City of London and arrived at Pudding Lane. We were able to explore the outside of The Monument and its significance in remembering The Great Fire of London. We sung London's Burning at Monument Square and then went and explored Pudding Lane, thinking about how it has changed over time. We were even able to stand in the exact spot the fire started!
Our day was not over yet! We then walked to Tower Bridge, stopping along the Thames Path to soak up the sights and sounds of London! We climbed 211 steps, stopping at various points along the way, until we reached the viewing platform where we stood on top of a glass floor, looking down to The River Thames below! We also saw amazing views of London and spotted lots of famous landmarks!
ALL of the children were exemplary role models for our school and we are extremely proud of them!
Despite each day being very long and tiring the children had a wonderful and unforgettable day, which will live long in their memories.
Sadly, our Year 2 cricket sessions have now come to an end but they were absolutely brilliant! Every Friday morning the children were so excited to go and see Ally for their class cricket workshop. For our final session all of the children in year 2 signed a cricket bat and gave it to Ally to say thank you.
A HUGE thank you to Ally and the Berkshire Cricket Foundation.
Our School Council team have been super busy collecting and counting our chocolate creme eggs that have been donated over the past week. We were so impressed with how generous everyone had been and couldn't believe how many donations we had! We counted them all up from across the classes and received a grand total of 268 eggs!!! Thank you so much to everyone who donated. We can't wait to receive our next delivery of knitted chicks and bunnies filled with a chocolate egg to sell to you soon.
This month, the Eco Club team checked on the progress of our winter wheat crop! Armed with measuring tapes and a whiteboard, the team carefully measured the height of the wheat and recorded their observations, with the tallest shoot measuring 37cm! We look forward to continuing to track the wheat’s progress and seeing how it flourishes in the coming months! Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
The team also got creative by decorating bright and colourful posters to encourage everyone to turn off the lights when they leave their classrooms! With longer daylight hours, there’s no need to keep lights on during the day, and the Eco Club are keen to spread the message!
In nurture, the children have had a great few weeks. We started this half term by making spring lambs using cotton wool, chicks using tissue paper and daffodils using card, paper cups and yellow paint. We used these to decorate our Spring notice board. We also made paper chains and stain glass window effect pictures to decorate the door.
This week we started to look at our senses, we did a hearing activity, listening to different everyday sounds like a lawn mower, fire engine and food sizzling and tried to guess what they were.
We ended this week with one of our favourite activities, sandwich making. the children chose jam or marmite and then got to enjoy eating what they had made.
We have been working hard during our forest School sessions to complete our dead hedge over the past few weeks. We are delighted with the end result and are pleased that our woodland creatures have a new habitat to explore and live in.
We have now begun work on another of the action points from our 3-year woodland management plan for the sustainable use of the woodland area, which is to plant and establish a hedgerow boundary or 'hedge wedge'.
We have been fortunate enough to receive 30 free native hedgerow plants: hazel, dog rose, dogwood, hawthorn and crab apple from The Woodland Trust. Our living hedge will further enhance our Woodland Area, providing another new habitat for the birds and other animals, which we hope will help to increase biodiversity within our school grounds.
We love finding out about and celebrating our children's achievements outside of school!
If your child has an achievement that they are very proud of and would like to share with us all, they will get the opportunity to do so during our Celebration Assembly on a Friday.
