Career Initiatives for the 2019-2020 School Year

Manufacturing Day - Fowlerville students attended this annual event held to showcase the reality of modern manufacturing careers. Fowlerville visited Asahi KASEI Plastics North America, Inc., Bekum America Corporation in Williamston, and Mott Community College in Howell. Mott Community College took students through a few different areas including HVAC, Welding & PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

Michigan Career Quest - Fowlerville students attended this annual career event which introduced students to the most in-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing, construction, health sciences and information technology. Hands-on interactive activities were provided to showcase skills students will need if they desire to pursue these career paths.

Educational Development Plans - Mrs. Lusk, along with teachers and counselors, worked with students to develop their Educational Development Plan (EDP). According to the Michigan Department of Education, an Educational Development Plan documents the process of identifying career goals and how you will achieve them. Fowlerville Community Schools uses XELLO to assist in completing EDP's. Students spend dedicated time in class each year working on their Educational Development Plans.

Internships - Several Agricultural Science students were placed in internships related to an aspect of the program.

Lunch & Learns - FHS hosts "Lunch & Learns", which is where we bring in different professionals during the lunch hour to provide students with an insider look into different industries and allow them to ask questions directly to a professional in that industry. FHS has previously hosted a Postmaster from the local post office, a police Sergeant and police Chief, a nurse practitioner, an insurance company representative, a physical therapist, a dentist and hygienist, an HVAC instructor from Mott Community College, a construction masonry company, etc… If you have a specific industry you would like FHS to host, please contact Mrs. Lusk.

Lunch & Life Skills - In 2019 FHS started hosting “Lunch & Life Skills” sessions. These are similar to Lunch & Learns, but instead of looking at a certain job or industry, we bring in professionals to provide students with information they will need once out of high school. We hosted a financial planner who talked about retirement and a bank representative who talked about loans and building credit. We also had the Assistant Director from the Office of Financial Aid at Eastern Michigan University here to talk to students about the FASFA form and allow them to ask any questions about financial aid.

Job Shadow Day - Held in December, this day provided students with the opportunity to observe an employee throughout the course of a typical day at work. Opportunities were provided in the areas of Marketing, IT, Sales, Skilled Trades, Executive Roles, etc…

Mock Interviews - If your student has an upcoming interview and would like to run through a mock interview, please set up a time with the career exploration mentor.
