22nd-28th Sept: 'Maths Week Scotland' and 'DIGITAL WEEK'
Friday 19th September 2025
For a short week, we managed to pack in a lot of activity. P5/6 made up planters for their daffodil bulbs and P2/3 were looking at bamboo and trying to find out how it grows. The pupil groups were fired up to make a impact on global and local issues such as sustainable development goals, building a fun-filled playground, making reading even more exciting and finding novel ideas for fundraising. The P7 children in each group minuted discussions but all children added to action plans and started creating group displays. These children have ideas and mean business!
Today, Ralphie in P2 played dramatic piano music as we welcomed local author, Barbara Henderson, into a whole-school assembly. We heard about Andrew de Moray, the Black Isle hero from the Middle Ages who led the Scottish Army alongside William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Oliver tried to run while wearing chain-mail and a helmet while James M tried to hold the armour and Archie managed the slide show. Barbara also read to us from her book, 'To War with Wallace' and shared her story about becoming an author during a writers' workshop with P4-7. Many bought a signed copy and most have new ambitions for their own writing!

We had a week of comings and goings. New children joined us in the nursery and new friends were made across the school as children mixed in clubs and pupil groups. Comic, craft and choir clubs seem to be drawing a new intake of interested recruits at lunchtimes. Hockey club saw a new set of keen players up at the astroturf, who already have a tournament in their calendars.
We all pulled together yesterday to say a heartfelt 'goodbye' to Mrs McNeil, who has worked in our nursery and office since January last year. The children created a big card, the choir sang 'Rocking All Over the World' and many gave her kindly-worded tributes, showing just how much she meant to them, welcoming with a smile whoever came by the school office. She will be missed but has assured us she will come back for our events.
Today, P6 took part in Bikeability, starting by eagerly going through the 'safety-check' steps and then moving on to the tracks on the tarmac. They listened and learned well, so we are immensely grateful to the team of committed volunteers, who made sure this excellent programme was set in motion for yet another squad of budding Culbokie cyclists!
This afternoon, as well as 'Head Teacher's Award', we started our fortnightly 'Kite Time' sessions, where learners hone meta-skills such as collaboration and critical thinking through technology, expressive arts, games, digital and enterprise activities. From all accounts, it has been a huge hit, allowing them the chance to exercise their imagination in infinite and aspirational ways. The question is, how high will they fly? We cannot wait to find out...

Friday 5th September 2025
The first week of September was a breeze at Culbokie Primary School. Our Parent Council met on Tuesday evening and discussed some of the projects they have helped to fund. Our chairpersons and secretary stood down after years of dedication to the school, and we are deeply grateful to them for their commitment. We had been hoping that others might come forward take up the positions but, for now, are open to anyone interested to come along for a chat about what it all involves. It can be as big or small as we choose, and we can find creative ways to share the commitment between willing volunteers. The Parent Council has been a tremendous asset to the school and we are all keen to have it up and running again soon so the children do not miss out on the benefit of the funds.
The community room was packed for lunchtime choir club on Wednesday and had two clubs running consecutively today. Comic Club is a new one, and an eager group of P3 children have taken on the baton of Craft Club from last years P7. This year, children have to complete an application form if they wish to run a club, and many have risen to the responsibility with gusto. New pupil groups also met today for the first time and P7 learners found out their 'Culbokie Children in Charge' leadership committees. The future is bright!
More fun and music took place yesterday afternoon when Miss McCallum and Miss O'Rourke swapped places for half an hour. P2/3 had an online Kodaly session on rhythm with Mr Thompson while Miss O'Rourke did a live one with P1/2. Meanwhile, P5/6 were flexing their minds with 'Philosophy for Children'. We have some deep thinkers in our school.
Today, we had an assembly with 'honesty' as our focus, a highly relevant Culbokie value. This was shortly followed by house captain elections. Our would-be captains had created exceptionally persuasive posters and presented excellent campaign speeches to their respective houses with confidence, clarity and purpose. The teachers and I were all relieved that we were not allowed to vote as it would have been all but impossible to decide, such was the calibre of candidates. The posters were of such a high standard that we will be displaying them for the next fortnight. Well done to all the children!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday 29th August 2025
We have had a fantastic first fortnight back at school for a brand new session. The sunny start made those early alarm clocks that little bit easier for everyone and we have noticed all children making a real effort to skip in through the gate in good time each morning, eager to learn and play in their new classes.
It has been lovely to welcome new starts to nursery, Primary 1 and even our staff team. Team 2025-26 has gelled well and is ready for graft! Our new teachers, Miss O'Rourke and Mrs Bennion are delighted to be here and excited to be part of our community.
Yesterday, we were treated to a performance of The Jungle Book by M&M Productions, which provided a catalyst for our whole-school literature-themed topic. Some nursery children joined us as well as four learners from Mulbuie Primary School. Our 'Reading Schools Group' showed them our library and explained how we made it to 'Gold'. It was exciting to see the follow-up P4-7 workshop on what goes on behind the scenes.
Learners were inspired to by this summer's success story of World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, who beat an AI robot without losing a piece, showing that our brains can be our most powerful gadgets if we engage them fully in play and learning. I have been incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm and aspiration of our pupils, even after six weeks of no school. This term, we have decided to focus on the three values that relate to how we interact with others: respect, kindness and honesty. Our shiny new house-point token display unit has already started to fill up as a result of all those considerate thoughts, words and actions. Long may this continue!
Classes have spent the first nine days honing routines, responsibilities, team and relationship-building, class charters, doing energetic PE lessons, renewing targets and hanving a go at some assessments along the way, so they are all needing their days off.
i hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

What an eventful week! It started with us receiving accreditation for our Reading schools Gold Award from the Scottish Book Trust. What better way to end the term than reaching this milestone with such an elusive award, showing we truly believe that reading really is the way forward in learning. The P2/3 trip to Rosemarkie Beach was also on Monday. On Tuesday, visitors from Scottish Water and Morrisons Construction talked to the children about how they work together to make sure we have clean water. It was inspirational for the children to see that both boys and girls can go into engineering jobs! They kindly gave us a few goody bags.
Thomas and Sophie represented Culbokie Primary School at the first ASG Sports Championships at Resolis Primary yesterday morning. We saw lots of excellent sportsmanship and took away a silver medal. What a fun morning!
This week was the P7 children’s ‘best week’, with three days jam-packed with activities they had planned with Mrs Shepherd, such as hide-and-seek around the school, 'Bring Your Pet to School Day' and 'Chocolate in the Woods' . It was then down to Mrs Malone to run their Leavers' Assembly this afternoon. It was wonderful to see so many parents there. For some, it was their first time at a Culbokie Leavers' assembly and, for others, their last. However, they have all been assured that they will always be welcome to come back and see us. It was an emotional show for staff, families and pupils alike, although we felt that the greatest resilience came from the children themselves.
Badminton Club were sad to lose Joan Columbine, who has run the club with dedication for over 8 years. We are immensely grateful to her and will make sure we carry on her legacy.
Nearly there! Have a great weekend.

This week, the P7s spent four days up at the 'big school' so it felt a little quieter for everyone here. We were relieved that they decided to come back on the Friday and were excited to share their stories.
P4 embarked on their 'Tour of the Black Isle' class trip and enjoyed visting some of the historic places, including a stopover in Cromarty for some drawing outside and lunch.
Nursery has a big week with their transition morning in P1 on Wednesday. On Thursday, they went to the park for their annual 'Teddy Bears' Picnic' so were excited to take their snacks and play with their teddies. Eileen, our lovely cook, made their sandwiches into teddy-bear shapes, which was the icing on the cake for them.
That morning, P5 and P6 tried out rugby with Ross Sutherland Rugby Team. It looks like we have talent beyond football and all children played well.
The pupil-led clubs finished this week so prizes were given out by those in charge. Have a look at the winning entries from 'Rock-painting Club'!
Culbokie Shield was a roaring success. The Culbokie Primary School team, led by Mason's dad, played exceptional football and the runners who came along ran their fastest. Both came in second place and won medals. Our fabulous parent council kept everyone happy with a superb burger stall and 'Culbokie Cake Fairies' provided treats and hot drinks for those in search of something sweet. Thank you to all who helped!

Sports Day was one of this week's biggest highlights. The sun stayed out for us all morning even though rain was threatened. We were grateful to all the families for coming along to show support and to the team at Fortrose Academy for taking a lead in running the event. It was wonderful to welcome back so many former pupils from S1 to S3 who represented all that is good about our school community. All children from nursery to P7 took part with enthusiasm and gave their best effort in both field and track events. Medals were given out but we know all are winners in their own right. One of the ultimate highlights was the obligatory parents v former pupils tug-of-war. Well done to the parents for fending off the group of such athletic warriors!
Yesterday, P5-7 took part in a botany lesson called ‘Rainforest Adventure’, live from the hot house of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, who have supported Black Isle primary schools this year. It made them think about the importance of conserving sustainable rainforests for the future.
Today, we had a visit from Mission Aviation Fellowship, who have been touring the UK to mark their 80th anniversary following the VE Day celebrations. We were excited to discover that they had an actual aeroplane with them, albeit without its engine! It was put together outside the school like large pieces of mechano so provided a lot of excitement. We found out about the work of MAF, how they link with organisations such as UNICEF and Water Aid to support developing rural communities across the world.
Have a great weekend!

Friday 6th June 2025
The beginning of June always marks the starting shot for a run of sporting activity and what a week we have had! Our P5-7 athletes flew the flag for Culbokie Primary at the Ross-shire County Sports in Dingwall on Tuesday. Despite the wind and a torrential downpour, they had fun, gave it their best effort and succeeded in winning the group sheild as well as plenty individual medals. We look forward to welcoming the shield to our cabinet here on Monday.
The Nursery Coffee Morning on Wednesday was well attended. Dee and I enjoyed having the chance to speak with parents over coffee and cookies. We are now extending these monthly events to anyone from the community with babies or toddlers who would like to come in and meet us and connect with other parents, so spread the word. Lego was a hit with one of our budding young builders!
Yesterday, the school was full of song thanks to Mrs Malone's singing practice for the P7 Leavers' assembly. That afternoon, P4 made it to the woods for outdoor learning, even though many had not long arrived back from the Baillie Cup. P1 also had a visit from 'Safe, Strong and Free' so it was a busy day all round.
Today, we celebrated success at assembly, where we were joined by some of our nursery children who will be moving up to P1 after the summer. They sat beautifully the whole way through and participated in the drum rolls and applauses with great enthusiasm. Our the school is in safe hands for next year!
Enjoy the weekend!

Friday 30th May 2025
This week started with a Monday morning assembly with Calum Iain, when he talked about the importance of timeless stories that do not grow old.
We are currently trying to gather our own accounts of family members who helped with the war effort in WW2. These will be added to a book to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day so we are hoping a few more will come in. As a school of avid readers, what could be more exciting than publishing our very own book to record real-life stories?
It was an active week in many ways. P2/3 made it to the woods, even though P4 had to cancel their outdoor learning trip yesterday due to a sudden downpour. Many children found the puddles this morning hard to resist! On the sunnier days, a group of girls from P7 led athletics sessions in the playground so that the younger children could practise for our upcoming sports day on June 10th. Trials and practice sessions also took place for next week's County Sports and Bailiie Cup events, while the hockey club challenged Resolis Primary to a game at the astroturf on Wednesday.
Once again, the goal for the 'Week 6' Headteacher Award was to demonstrate all the school values every day. It is amazing how often teachers notice children being polite, thoughtful and doing random acts of kindness without looking for a reward. Across the school, we have also been impressed with the effort shown in lessons and the ways children find to bring a sense of fun to school life. This was evident when I spoke to the P5-7 children about last weeks' May Fayre. We raised nearly £1300 thanks to their innovative enterprises so the next job for them is deciding how the funds will be spent.
Enjoy the long weekend!

Friday 23rd May 2025
This week was a bustle of enterprise throughout the school as everyone was preparing for the 'May Fayre'. P1 restored and labelled pre-loved teddies, P2/3 set up a kitchen and put their hygeine gloves on to make fruit pots and kebabs, P4 made noughts-and-crosses game sets, the P5/6 classroom nearly became a greenhouse for their plant kitchen stall and P6/7 set up a range of games and activities. All children had costed, priced and marketed their projects to raise a profit for the school fund, making for some especially relevant learning this week. Even our clubs and pupil groups planned some of their own stalls.
Despite the business-hub feel, P5-7 still managed to attend an online event on Wednesday morning, called 'Meet the STEM Superstars', which was a follow-up to the RAF Glider Challenge they took part in at the start of January. Phillippa from the RAF gave them inspration for future careers. It was also National Numeracy Day so P1 drew pictures of what jobs they could do if they keep working hard in their maths lessons. Click the link for National Numeracy Family Maths Toolkit.
We felt we wanted to spend time outdoors whenever possible. P4 went for their walk to the woods yesterday afternoon to do bushcraft. Nursery have been taking care of bees and plants in the garden. They even had tadpoles for a day although there must have been something about the habitat did not suit the tiny creatures but we learned valuable lessons.
Today's May Fayre was a roaring success and we were delighted to see so many members of the community coming along for coffee or tea and a cake, as well as many former pupils dropping by to take part in activities. The sun shone for us so it was a bright and jolly way to end the week. The fabulous Parent Council did a superb job of organising a delightful refreshments area which was well attended by everyone. We are grateful to all who came along and contributed to this annual event to make it possibly our best one yet!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Last week, most P7 children went to Loch Insh, accompanied by myself and Mrs Shepherd. We had wonderful weather and the children rose to every challenge, from pladdleboarding and canoeiing to the jungle float and archery. They were fiercely competitive in their room-check challenge and showed all our values for the entire week. They rolled off the bus on Friday afternoon, tired but happy with their achievement. What an incredible group!
While we were away, the rest of the school celebrated the 80th Anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8th May. P5/6 did exposition writing from their mini topic on World war Two. Meanwhile, P4 learned how to play traditional outdoor games from the 1940's and even made their own hopscotch markings. All children observed a 2-minute silence at a special assembly and watched videos of people who were children at the time on Picture News and Newsround.
This week and last, our football teams represented the school at the Boys' and Girls' Ross-shire Football Tournaments in Alness. They played some excellent football and both coaches were impressed with their effort, resilience and teamwork. Well done to them! Thank you to parent coaches, Graham Spence, Darren Gordon and Alison Mackenzie, for supporting us with coaching in preparation and at the events.
The P2/3 class showed us that grammar can be exciting at their class assembly on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, we had a special visit from childrens' author, James Campbell, who entertained us with fiction and non-fiction readings from some of his books. He showed that writing and reading can be hilariously funny and answered many tricky questions the children asked him, mainly about animals. Nursery have been laearning about bees and pollination in time for National Bee week next week.
Today is Miss Mackenzie's last day in P1. The class gave her a Headteacher's Award for making their learning fun and being kind to them while she "learns to become a teacher". We wish her all the best and will always welcome her back for a visit. The P7 children went to Fortrose Academy for the Mini Highland Games transition today so we missed them from assembly this morning.
Have a fantastic weekend!

Friday 2nd May 2025
We started this week with a visit from the photographer for class photos. For each, she did a 'fun' version so we are looking forward to seeing how they come out. I also met with the Parent Council on Monday evening for a very positive and productive meeting.
The busiest schedule of all this week was probably that of P1, who went on their first class trip to Whin Park and the Botanic Gardens on Tuesday, the woods on Wednesday and their first class assembly yesterday. They even provided us with some live music, including Lucas on the drums. What rising starts we have in our midst!
That is not to take the shine off P5-7, who were represented by a team of 12 at the 'Highland Celebration of STEM' event in Inverness yesterday, supported by Miss Barnes and Mrs Shepherd. They presented their sustainable school models with detailed information about renewable energy sources and took part in challenges to test their scidentific knowledge and ability to think 'outside the box'. Meeting representatives from event partners such as 'The Scottish Forestry Trust' and speaking with industry specialists seemed to be a highlight for all. However, the biggest bonus of all was Culbokie Primary School being announced first as runners up for teamwork and then as 'Stemovator Regional Winner' for 2025! The elation was tangible when they bundled out of the taxis to cheers at 3pm. We now have £250 to spend on science resources for the school as well as a shiny new trophy so are all delighted.
Along in the nursery, our outdoor space is blooming with life. We have a bug viewing station in case you are interested in looking for bugs, potato and tomato plants beginning to sprout in the mini growing station and, most exitingly of all, a new outdoor mini reading shed, which arrived yesterday (see picture), allowing us to take our afternoon storytime outside in the open air, just in time for May sunshine!
Have a lovely long weekend.

Friday 25th April 2025
Our first week back started with 'Earth Day' and some deep thinking about what changes we can make to look after our environment and protect the planet. Often, it is all the small things we do that count the most. Have a look at P5/6's 'pledge tree'.
Our value of the week was 'respect' so children were recognised for manners, consideration and respect for our surroundings at this afternoon's head teacher award party. They also had the chance to find out what was hiding in the ten big brown boxes so were delighted to discover a new set of indoor/outdoor beanbags.
Wider achievements were also celebrated with Oliver in P5/6 and Eilidh in P2/3, who have a place on the 'achievements wall for their efforts outside of school. Oliver came joint first in the Kingussie Golf Championships and Eilidh won a shield for Highland dancing so we are impressed with them for working so hard over the holidays.
If you have some free time, pop along to Dingwall Library to see the P6/7 reading posters displayed. What a super achievement for our talented learners to promote their love of reading books and share this in the community. Well done to them!
Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 4th April 2025
We have finally reached the end of term! A lot has happened since January so we have been reflecting on some of our favourite things. Children have cited the following as highlights: 'Stemovators', pupil groups, having the big chess set, Boccia and Games Club, Fishkeeper Fry, woodwork, reading buddies with nursery, the RAF glider challenge', Cross Country', the Silver Party and 'Matilda, the Muiscal'. As always, children are our best source of inspiration so we take their lead on what is important to them when we plan their learning.
This week, it was super to finish off with the P4 Fishkeeper Fry assembly on Monday and have parent and other family members in to see it. These children really are experts in aquatics and have a skill in making it fun. Our fish tank is in safe hands! The class visited Simpson's Graden Centre the following day to find out even more about fishkeeping from Nathan.
On Monday, Lindsay, our school nurse, came in to talk to the p5-7 children about 'My Body, My Space, My Choice'. The presentation sparked discussion around the importance of personal space as well as saying and understanding the meaning of 'no'.
Our last pupil group sessions of the year were held on Tuesday when we reviewed all that had been done since August and felt an immense sense of achievement. That afternoon, P5 leaned how to make vehicle bases from wood and P7 had a visit from the Fortrose Academy liasion teacher.
Finally, yesterday, we had our annual Easter Egg Design Competition. Who knew eggs could cause such amusement and hilarity? We had our assembly today, where Calum Iain explained the meaning behind the story and kindly brought us a box-full of Creme Eggs, enough for the whole school. Helen had also generously made each P1 a crochet mini chick with an egg inside. All children celebrated house awards this afternoon, from rounders outside, to arts and crafts inside and a film session in the hall. Overall, the end of term was well and truely celebrated!
Enjoy the holidays!

Spring is in the air and spirits were high this week. On Tuesday, I headed to Dingwall Academy with three P7 learners for the Highland Enterprising Mathematics Challenge, organised by Craig Lowther from UHI. The poster theme was 'Codes and Cyphers' and ours was commended. A whole day of maths puzzles, team challenges and head-to-head games tested brainpower. It was exciting to take part in this for a third year running.
Wednesday was a whirlwind of activity. Our badminton team of seven keen players took the 'Wee Bus' or a lift to Dingwall Leisure Centre for the Ross-shire Schools Badminton Tournament. Tension filled the air as they battled against fierce competition, showing stamina, skill and determination. They might not have taken home the trophy but did win several games in singles and doubles so we are proud of their efforts. Of course, none of this would have happened if it had not been for Joan's dedication to running the club on Fridays, and also supporting as umpire on the day .
Later that day, we had our very own sustainable science fair, the 'Climate Smarter STEMOVATORS Showcase' . The P5-7 children finally had the chance to present their models for a sustainable school. They pitched their designs skillfully, alongside supporting information and data, to five STEM Ambassadors, industry experts, who judged them against strict criteria. Parents and other familiy members came along to see and rate the stalls. The winning teams will attend a STEM celebration event at the UHI School of Forestry on May 1st so stakes were high! However, we felt that all children were successful and exceeded all expectations in rising to the challenge. Our future is in safe hands if this showcase was anything to go by.
Our first nursery coffee morning of the term was held in the canteen on Thursday so it was lovely to chat with some of our newer parents. We value the importance of the early years in children's developement so will do all we can to support children and families at this stage. Following feedback, we will start holding these on a monthly basis.
The school was scintellating in silver decorations for today's Rights Respecting Schools Silver Celebration Party. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we were grateful to all who produced a banquet of cake, treats and fruit platters. We were glad the sun shone so energy could be burnt off outside afterwards! It was a lovely way to mark such a significant milestone for Culbokie Primary School.
This week's Headteacher Award winners were rewarded for demonstrating honesty, our 'theme of the week' for the past fortnight. We are learning that it really is the best policy, and is often a good start when making things better, whether in schoolwork or in friendships. Children have all been reminded that values extend outside of school so we are grateful to parents and local partners for support in helping them to be responsible citizens in the community. Our chess club exemplified this by working together to finish our outdoor chessboard!
Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 21st March 2025
The Reading School Group and Mrs Shepherd ventured out to Culbokie Green on Wednesday afternoon, which was the perfect outing for such a gloriously sunny spring day. Penny Edwards from Culbokie Community Trust showed the children the work done by local volunteers to create facilities within the space. Our literary learners looked at potential outdoor reading areas in nature for their project as part of our quest for 'Gold' in Reading Schools.
With consistantly blue skies, outdoor learning was in full flow this week. Mr Sharp was in yesterday to take maths outside with P2/3, who used willow branches to make 2D and 3D shapes, using rulers, elastic bands and mini saws. What a fun way to learn! The class had also been decorating the playground with their words and sounds in chalk. In nursery, children were making the most of the sunshine on their new grass mound and beautifully-blooming garden. Our giant chessboard is also now in place so the chess club are looking forward to sharing their strategies and skills with others.
Yersterday was International Happiness Day so the Pupil Council organised for everyone to come up with ideas for how to celebrate it. One favourite was that everybody had to smile and say something nice to one person, definitely something we could keep going for every other day of the year! Coincidentally, it was also Parents' Night, where there were many smiles. It was super to welcome so many parents for purposeful consultations with class teachers.
The P5-7 children ended the week for us by performing a rendition of 'Naughty', from 'Matilda', for nursery, P1-4 and their own families. It might have been their best performance yet and was a cheerful way to go into the weekend!

Friday 14th March 2025
This week was British Science Week so it was exciting to have a look at all the science and technology enterprises that have been happening around the school this term. P5-7 have been busy working on their STEMOVATORS 'Climate Smarter' projects whereby they are building models of sustainable schools so have been learning about sustainable materials and sources of renewable energy. They are looking forward to showcasing these creations and designs to families and industry representatives at our workshop on Wednesday 26th March.
Meanwhile, P4 have been learning about how to care for the fish in our new aquarium and the fish seem to be thriving in our open area. P2/3 have been finding out about ear drums and P1 about the body. In Nursery, growing things in the garden has stretched little scientific minds!
The week's highlight had to be today's P5-7 trip to the Inverness Music Festival to perform 'Naughty' from 'Matilda, the Musical'. After yesterday's rehearsal to the P1-3 children, from which they recieved positive feedback, they arrived today dressed up and ready to compete. The children were exemplary in their attitude and and and gave an impressive performance act. Some of the feedback notes said: "fab costumes, excellent direction/choreography... dictation was very good indeed". Such an achievement and a wonderful way to end the week!
Enjoy the weekend.

It was appropriate to have 'achievement' as our theme of the week yet again as we have all been successful on many levels...
From nursery to P7, we immersed ourselves inbooks for World Book Day, basically an extension of every other day of the week now that we all read for pleasure. On Tuesday, P2/3 read to people at the church cafe. On Thursday, the day itself kicked off with an assembly where we were treated to a visit from tree-expert, author and parent, Dr Euan Bowditch, who kindly read to us from his newly-published children's book, 'The Elm Hunters'. We are now inspired to hunt for live elms to adopt in the local area.
The teachers had planned a carousel of book-based activities: a book-themed cafe with sofas and 'chillout' music, character-building, 'setting' construction, comic strips and digital 'Book Creator' so we all rotated round and enjoyed the variety with parents and grandparents joining in. I was tempted to spend the afternoon in the 'Book Nook Cafe'! We brought in books and were given tokens for a second-hand book swap; leftover books are now in our permanent book-swap shelf in the open area. (There is also one for visitors in the reception area so feel free to use it!) thanks to Jax in P1, we also have a giant 'Beanstalk', his comptition entry for 'Bring Your Book to Life'! Judging the spectacular entries was a tough job for all concerned and some of us struggled to resist Holly's 'Willie Wonka's Edible Chocolate Factory.
The week ended on an 'achievement' high note with our boys' and girls' cross country teams both winning the Ross-Shire Championships. The boys pulled off a joint win with Kiltearn and the girls surpassed fierce competition to bring the shield back for a second year running. Portia in P5 came in 7th out of 150 children to win a medal. Well done to all for an astounding team effort!
Have a lovely weekend.

This week's focus was on achievement and what it means to us as individuals and as a whole school. One of our P1 learners described it as 'having a dream and then winning it', which we all agreed with.
On Tuesday afternoon, some of our speediest and most resilient runners joined 200 children from other schools for the Culbokie Woods event of the 'Winter Running Series'. Liam in P6 won a medal for coming 8th out of 98 so well done to him! For the team, it was a good chance to practise for the upcoming Ross-shire Schools Cross Country Championships.
Hockey Club was back on the go outside for some success in the sunshine. Our other clubs are going from strength to strength and it is good to see children of all agaes trying out new activities.
We had a 'Reading Assembly today where P5/6 shared some of their favourite books. Well done to Jasmine, Sadie, Karolina, Oliver and Lily for inspiring us! Ten children also won the 'Headteacher's Award' for achievement in reading, from decoding and blending to fluency and reading for information. It is great to see the joy and sense of success children gain from reading. We look forward to World Book Day next week!
Have a lovely weekend.

Happy Valentines Day! This week, we had Safer Internet Day on Tuesday so have spent some time going over how to be safe online. This also brought up some reflective discussion amongst the older children about bullying. We are planning a digital safety workshop with our digital leaders in the next half of the Spring Term so watch this space...
Our thoughtful cook, Eileen, made everyone a heart-shaped strawberry shortcake to celebrate Valentine's Day. Calum-Iain led today's assembly, where he used the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco to illustrate the importance of having a solid foundation. It was built with a deep concrete foundation to withstand earthquakes. This could be complared to the foundations of respect and kindness we are trying to build here at Culbokie Primary School. Inspired by this, James and Ben in P4 then built a replica of another unshakable building from Kapla - see the picture of their Colloseum!
Snowflakes are out in the nursery garden where the children are also caring for the birds by keeping the feeder well-stocked. It may be cold, but the sun is shining and we can dare to say that spring is round the corner!
Have a lovely weekend.

As we come to the end of 'Child Mental Health Week', we have many reasons to reflect and celebrate. The Value of the Week was kindness so we heard about children from each class who are kind and friendly to everybody. Some achieved the Headteacher Award for remembering to including others and helping them when they are hurt. As part of Child Mental Health Week, some classes did a mini workshop on developing tooks to respond to bullying behaviours. Our Chess Club team set a wonderful example of incusion and respect. This week, there were children from P1-7 and an almost equal number of boys and girls all enjoying games of chess and being supported by the three 'coaches'.
Children at Culbokie have recently been working hard on manners such as saying 'please', 'thank you' or 'excuse me', and holding the door for others. This has not gone unnoticed, even outside of the school. Today, we received a phonecall from Dingwall Leisure Centre to say how impressed they were with the politeness of our P5-7 children who were there for swimming lessons (see photo). What a lovely report to hear!
It has been an active week too. On Monday, the P5 children were taught how to play 'Boccia', an inclusive game, by three junior leaders from Munlochy Primary School. Now for them to teach others here how to play it and add to our playground activities! The older children were also tested on their long distance running this week when they did seven laps of the playground to see if they could run a mile. With some more practice, we might manage to keep hold of the Cross Country shield for another year. The Snowman Drive will be in two weeks and the colour-themed boxes are ready.
This week's ultimate achievement had to be becoming a Silver Rights Respecting School. A UNICEF Professional Advisor visited on Tuesday to interview children and adults. We were delighted that the children's enthusiasm, awareness and understanding of what rights actually mean in practice was noticed. Their bravery, honesty and hard work helped us to achieve this significant award. Onwards and upwards! If you would like to finmd out what the awrd means, click here: https://www.unicef.org.uk/rights-respecting-schools/getting-started/silver/what-is-silver/
Have a lovely weekend.

We were all delighted to be in school for a full week. It started with cultural celebrations following last weekend's Burns Night and the beginning of the Chinese New Year. P2/3 performed some Scots poetry and 5/6 explained the meaning behind the 'Year of the Snake' at assembly. The Parent Council met on Tuesday night and discussed some exciting fundraising ideas for the rest of the session. Plans to arrange for playground games markings moved further ahead, which was exciting.
Children then voted for their favourite playground markings at today's assembly, where we also celebrated 'achievement' Some children have been working exceptionally hard, even when they find work difficult, and this has been noticed. We asked children for their thoughts on homework as part of a review of our homework policy. Some interesting views!
Our lunchtime club regime is going from strength to strength. Rock-painting and games are two new additions to the schedule on offer. Reading Club with Mrs MacGruer on a Friday is always a calm way for children to end the week.
As we move into February and the days begin to stretch, we have plenty of reasons for feeling bright so check our calendar and class sites for events. Even the daffodil bulbs planted in autumn have begun to grow!
Have a lovely weekend.

This week started off with the 'Wellebing Warriors' sharing their plans for break and lunchtime mornitoring in the playground. Assemblies this week had a focus on manners for all, the aim for this week's Headteacher Award.
P5, 6 and 7 children had a particularly busy week. On Wednesday, they took over the gym hall for the 'Glider Challenge'. This was the first part in a national aeronautical engineering compitition to design a sustainable aircraft. The workshop was run by the RAF Royal International Air Tattoo and supported by The 'Smallpeice Trust', a charity whose motto is 'Dare to Inspire'. Have a look at their parents' page to find out more: https://www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk/parents Everyone enjoyed the chance to apply maths and science skills to a real-life activity.
The P5-7 pupils then took the bus to Dingwall on Thursday for the first in a 5-week series of swimming lessons and library sessions with Highlife Highland. This was successful last year and we are grateful to the Parent Council for supporting this venture once again.
Our fish tank is back in action and ready to accommodate the next generation of Culbokie Primary fish. The P4 children are excited to learn about how to care for them. We have missed the fish from our open area so it will be good to have them back.
Have a lovely weekend.

What a shivery start to 2025 at Culbokie Primary School! After two 10am openings and one full 'snow day', we are looking forward to the first whole week back next week. The children have loved playing in the snow, whether it be dancing amidst the falling flakes or making snow angels and snowmen. It was a multisensory winter wonderland for them to enjoy all week. A final chance to do it again today resulted in many cold but cheerful faces.
Our assembly focus for the new year was 'Shine Like a Star in 2025'. Who knew that, as humans, we share many 'elements' with stars, such as oxygen, calcium and magnesium? The children were astounded to discover these scientfic facts, which have given a whole new meaning to the words, 'being a star'. They came up with their own ways to sprinkle startdust around the place by upholding our Culbokie values. Ask P2 and P3 about their some star-shaped resulutions...
The pupil groups met again on Wednesday and have been making ambitious new plans for the term. Plans are being drafted for a return of last year's 'Beetle Drive' so watch this space and keep an eye on the calendar!
Have a lovely weekend.

We have had a week of celebration here at Culbokie Primary school. It started last weekend with the choir singing at the Senior Citizens' Lunch on Saturday. We then welcomed members of the community in for 'Coffee and Carols' on Monday afternoon, something we did last year and will definitely keep in the calendar.
Another piece of excitement on Monday was our 'Reading Schools' Group being presented with the 'Scottish Book Trust Silver Award', an epic accomplishment of which we are quite proud. Thanks go to Mrs Shepherd for leading this group and submitting the evidence. However, it is absolutely a whole-school achievement as everyone has contributed to us being a reading school in more than name. At the same assembly, we had a visit from the Findon Hall Committee, who kindly presented the logo competition winners with Waterstones vouchers. Anna's design will be used for the hall logo but well done to Katie D and Daisie for being runners up.
The P1-3 pupils showed us that when things are really bad, they can only get better for 'Santa's Setbacks'. It is safe to say that they rose to the challenge!
Yesterday, we had our annual walk over to the church. We were grateful to Terry and everyone there for the warm welcome, service and treats afterwards. The children all enjoyed the experiencve.
Today, there were a few big rewards. The choir were surprised to find out they were heading to the woods with me, Mr Sharp and Mrs Morton for hot chocolate and marshmallows as a 'thank you' for all their effort and time over the past few weeks, as well as their positive attitude to making happy memories for themselves, our school and our community. 'Balmeanach' also received a film afternoon for winning the termly house award for a second time.
With one more week to go, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Friday 6th December 2024
We started this week with Craft Carousel Day, which is now a standing tradition for the start of December. Children rotated round classes, honing their fine motor and artistic skills to make decorative creations. Some of us have also been using maths skills in shape and symmetry to make 3D snowflakes with which to deck our hall.
Walking Wednesday was planned as our first Reindeer Run. However, given the frost and ice that morning, it would have been more like a 'snowman skate' so we decided against it. Our eager reindeer are looking forward to a run next week instead!
Yesterday, P4 went to the woods with Mr Sharp and Mrs Morton, who helped them to use a flint and steel to light cotton wool. They saw and even tasted the results of their bushcraft skills by having a hot chocolate as a treat. Thankfully, this did not put them off their 'Festive Lunch' with turkey, trimmings and trifle to finish. The children were even served by the teachers so they were able to skip the queue for a change. Thanks to the preparation and skill of our canteen staff, it went smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Chess Club started yesterday to add to our weekly schedule of pupil-led clubs happening at lunchtime. We now have a big board near the cloakroom where all the club information is posted and children can sign up if they feel like doing an activity inside.
The P7 pupils went to Fortrose Academy for a transition ceilidh this morning and returned here exhausted but buzzing with excitement. We can always trust our fabulous pupils to rise to the occasion and represent the school values on these trips.
Lots of practice is happening for upcoming events so we hope to welcome many visitors to Culbokie Primary over the next fortnight!
Have a great weekend.

Friday 29th November 2024
With less than four weeks to go until the end of term, we are all gearing up for festive fun. This week's 'Value of the Week' was 'fun' so today's awards went to children who showed imaginative play and brought a sense of fun to their class by showing a sense of humour and making sure others around them were happy.
Yesterday, the choir sang to hundreds at the Drumossie Hotel for the P&J Concert. They were a tribute to our school and it was enjoyed by all, especially the families who came to watch!
Our Eco Team and Pupil Council have been out in force to promote sustainability. On Wednesday, we sold unused festive jumpers in our reception area. Today was 'Dress Down Friday' so the 'Sharing Shed' table became a mound of toys and other potential gifts. What a kind community we have here!
This week was also the last week for going to the woods for many of us. P6/7 were building freestanding structures from twigs, which was incredible to see. Lots more creativity to come in the next few weeks...
Have a lovely weekend!

This week is Book Week Scotland so the infant classes received 'Read-Write-Count' treat bags. Here, we feel that every week is a 'book week' as reading is central to learning, creativity and fun. Even children who have been reluctant readers in the past are now relishing the opportunity to read for enjoyment.
We are also finding out more about 'pupil voice' as our 'Right of the Month (UNCRC Article 45). This is something we have been developing for the past few years through our pupil groups, child-led clubs, responsibliities and child-led class topics. We have been refecting on all the ways in which our pupils help to shape our school.
https://www.scottishbooktrust.com/reading-and-stories
The snow fell more heavily that we all expected but I was delighted to hear that many children were taking advatage of it to boost their creativity skills through construction and ice art!
Finally, a shout out to Eve Ross in P6, who officiated as a mascot at last weekend's rugby game at Murrayfield. We are sure her cheerful positivity helped Scotland to achieve such a great winning result. Well done, Eve!
Have a lovely weekend and stay warm!

Friday 15th November 2024
This is 'Anti Bullying Week' so the theme of 'respect' has been central to conversation. Children here have been reflecting deeply on how respect applies to themselves and each other. A year on from our introduction of the 'High 5', almost all are able to remember the five steps without hesitation. When things go wrong in the classroom or playground, they are using this as a tool to unpick situations and learn from mistakes. Tuesday was 'Odd Socks Day' to remind ourselves that no two people are the same so it is okay to be different.
We started the week with Remembrance Assembly, when we spent two minues reflecting at 11am on Monday 11th. It was a good time to remember former brave pupils of Culbokie Primary whose names are engraved on the plaque in our open area.
On Tuesday, we were treated to an early performance of 'Aladdin' by M&M productions. It was enjoyed by all, particularly when two teachers were asked to dance!
After Parents' Evening and the flu immunisations were over, we ended the week with spots and splashes of yellow for 'Children In Need'. Today was also the first day of another lunchtime club where Mrs MacGruer hosted 'Reading Club' for children who wanted time to relax and read on beanbags during their lunch break. We now have a display board dedicated to clubs and information for children.
Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 8th November 2024
November was off to a roaring start with firework fun over the weekend and into the start of the week. We had a positive and purposeful meeting of the Parent Council, who have supported us with next week's live performance of Aladdin and are purchasing P7 hoodies once again. Progress is also being made on playground game markings...
Children have been thinking about Remembrance and the meaning behind the poppies. Our school is ablaze with colour this week as their reflections come to life in art. We will share these at Remembrance Assembly on Monday morning.
Yesterday we took part in Outdoor Classroom Day. The older classes learned about the science of firelighting using flints, and how to build a tent with a tarpaulin, P4 went to the woods while the other classes did all sorts of lessons in the playground. The sun was shining so we could not have wished for a better autumn day to take our learning out into the open air.
Reading Assembly was today, so we were all inspired by P6/7's accounts from their personal books, which they are clearly reading for pure enjoyment and their enthusiasm for literature is palpable. Two readingchampions from each class won the HT Award so they ended the week with hot chocolate and games in the community room - always my favourite part of the week!
Have a lovely weekend.

Can you believe we have reached the start of November? The mounds of fallen leaves and autumn winds remind us that the seasons are shifting and we have to wrap up warm. We welcomed Mrs McNeil to our office so she has been familiarising herself with all the new names, faces and spaces around the school this week.
Our pupil groups were in full flow: P5/6 helped to move all the shoeboxes into the Blythswood van so these will soon be on their way to happy recipients abroad; the Fantastic Fundraisers welcomed a visitor from CHAS, one of this year's charities: the Eco Group decorated our new soft and hard plastic recycling bins and placed them strategically around the school.
Yesterday, Ms Eileen Mackintosh came back to start this year's P5-7 choir and Mr Thompson was doing Kodaly in P2/3 so it was certainly a day of song.
Today the school was bedazzled with batwings, cats' tails, horns, fancy dresses, a werewolf and many other wonderful outfits. Thankfully, no broomsticks were used to fly around the playground and no wands used for anything snister! P4 had taken sticks from the woods to make webs, which they wove with string for some outdoor art - have a look for them around the school - how creative!
Finally, our Culbokie poppy tapestry is once again adorning the Fortrose Cathedral Square for Remembrance next week.
Have a lovely weekend!

Friday 11th October 2024
We have reached the end of term, an exciting time for all. As the leaves change colour and start to fall off the trees, we have also been dealing with changes here.
Mrs Ferns, our fabulous clerical assistant, left us toady to embark on new adventures. The children, staff and parents gave her the best send off they could with an assembly of 'hats', explaining all the hats worn by Mrs Ferns in Culbokie Primary School. The Parent Council presented her with gifts and the children presented her with a beautiful framed image, describing all the roles she has played for us over the past 21 years.
We were also sad to see Mrs Subha leave her playground supervisor post with us. However, she is moving to greater things to work in the science department of a local secondary school, so we wish her all the best too.
Have a wonderful and well-earned holiday, everyone!

Friday 4th October 2024
With one week to go until the holidays, we were feeling the autumnal atmosphere around the school. Our Rights of the Week relate to preventing discrimination and the right to education.
It has also been a week of charitable efforts. Our Macmillan Coffee Morning on Wednesday was small but sweet, made so by the friendly chat and plates of home-baked empire biscuits. Hopefully we will have a few extra faces the next time we hold a coffee morning! On Wednesday, our Pupil Council and parent volunteers filled boxes for the ShoeBox Appeal. One more week to go...
We are grateful to all parents who completed the homework and maths surveys, which provided rich data for redrafting our policy and practice. This feedback, alongside that of the children, is essential in helping to inform how we do things. Look out for more in the near future.
We are delighted to announce that we have now been awarded the accolate of 'School Sport Award Silver' by Sport Scotland. It is wonderful to have our effort and ethos recogniosed in this way so thank you to all who have contributed in various ways.
Another highlight of the week had to be today, World Animal Day, proving that we are a school of sincere animal lovers. Iona and Mary from Munlochy Animal Aid came along to assembly to present on the work of their charity. The Fantastic Fundraisers hounded them with a barrage of questions and we were treated to a zoo of animal outfits, from a giraffe to a baby shark! Check the Fantastic Fundraisers page on this site, under 'Pupils' to see how much we raised. Also check the pages of the other groups and see their plans for the year ahead.
Have a great weekend!

We have been busy with Maths Week Scotland and have spent time on activities to show how maths helps us in real life and what jobs involve number skills. P5/6 were creative with times and calendar dates while P4 made amazing mazes with sticks in the woods. The whole school tried to work out how far our crate of fruit travelled so the winner will be announced on Monday's assembly. Overall, we had lots of fun. The maths survey for parents is still open for responses...
P1 families came to visit the classroom and see how well the children have settled in. The childen loved to spent time reading with their parents or grandparents in school. We also had a nursery coffee morning today to have a chat and raise funds for 'Macmillan'.
P6 children are now proficient cyclists thanks to our wonderful team of trained volunteers, who have given up the past few Friday afternoons to sport hi-viz vests and champion safe bikeability.
We had a generous pile of donations for the Sharing Shed today and the Blythswood box gifts are coming in hard and fast. We have a very generous school community.
Have a great weekend!

Even short weeks can be action-packed, as we discovered this week at Culbokie Primary school!
The children were delighted to see a new set of goal posts had been installed for the football pitch, just in time for the rota to show effect.
Pupil groups met on Wednesday to elect secretaries and chairs. They have all started working on their action plans with gusto. Have a look on their oages on this site to find out more.
Today was our Eco Day, which went well despite the misty start. Thanks to 'Frank Nichol Garden and Farm Machinery', all children had the chance to plant their own daffodil bulb. Thank you to all who donates pots and compost to make for a bright spring in our playground. Check the pictures and class blog for other fun lessons. P6 were on the road for Bikeability and won their first badge. Excellent work to them, and thank you to the leaders!
We are on the 'Maths Week Scotland' map for next week. Expect challenges, surveys and fun with numbers. I have launched the first, the 'Fruit-Crate Challenge' to link this with today's eco theme. Children need to estimate the total number of miles travelled by the fruit. The closest will win book tokens and their choice of fruit from the box. More challenges to come!
Enjoy the weekend!

As we reach the long weekend and halfway point to the October holidays, it is good to pause and reflect. Today, we were encouraging each other to use kind hands, feet and even words, referencing Bambi: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say nothing at all." The Headteacher Award this week was for kindness and good manners.
On Monday, P6/7 went to the beach for rockpooling so enjoyed a day of summery sunshine, filled with fun and outdoor learning.
Enjoy the weekend!

We have had a super 'Week 3'! On Monday, we all discussed at assembly about what 'respect' looks and feels like. Manners were our focus for this week's HT Award. This is one we do not want to drop. We also considered this week's 'rights' (1, 4 and 41) which are about the definition of a child. Our Parent Council met that evening and brought their enthusiasm to event planning, fundraising and school improvement. Digital safety was an important theme.
On Tuesday, P5/6 welcomed Stephen, a geologist, for a workshop on volcanoes and earthquakes. Who knew Scotland was so seismic? P5/6 also had their efforts rewarded after Dobbies' Garen Centre responded to their letter and donated a peace lilly as well as giving them a discount on plants. Their £15 class plant budget went further than any other class so full marks for enterprise!
Pupil leadership was a central theme this week with pupil groups meeting for the first time on Wednesday and the house captain speeches and elections were this morning. Congratulations to Daisy, Anna and Maddie as the competition was fierce. We have some talented orators in our midst! P6 children had fun this afternoon at Bikeability, thank to Dave Parry and the team of volunteers.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

What an eventful second week back! We have started each day by listening to some of our fabulous pupils on MFR's 'School of the Week'. While we know they are super, it was a thrill to hear them speak on the radio with such confidence and give such entertaining answers. Download the MFR app to listen in if you missed any. Well done to Jasmine, Elen, Isla, Bodie, Holly and Inara!
We were all treated to M&M Productions' perfortmance of 'Alice in Wonderland' yesterday morning. As we strive to achieve our Silver Award for Reading Schools, it was a source of joy to see one of our favourite pieces of classic children's literature come to life with some lovely music. Children have thoroughly enjoyed the follow-up learning activities.
Our 'Value of the Week' for assembly was 'respect'. Children are beginning to show an understanding that this needs to be for ourselves, other people and things around us. Class Charters are up on the walls and it is clear that children are remembering that they have a right to learn as well as a right to play. Happily, we are delighted to see them trying hard to protect these rights for themselves and others.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine!

It has been a wonderful first week back and great to see that the children are happy and excited about the new sesison! After seven weeks off, they have still remembered our school routines and the Culbokie Code!
We have been discussing achievements from the Olympic Games in Paris and what lessons we can learn about teamwork, perseverance and self-discipline. Children have been thinking about what goals and dreams they would like to achieve for the new school year...
Everyone seems happy to be back, meet old and new friends and get to know their new teachers. How exciting!
Have a good weekend.
