Journal Entry Maya E.
I don’t like being targeted. I find it very creepy and stalk-ish, especially when I am talking about something and coincidentally Instagram has the exact ad for what I was talking about. I had been talking to my friend about makeup from Sephora not even being on Instagram. About an hour later an ad for Sephora makeup popped up.
The store Urban Outfitters is very different from all other clothing companies mostly based on their aesthetic. Everything stands out just by how they are presented. When you look at the store Brandy Melville everything just looks super boring and plain.

Day one overview:
I was a little confused by some of the ads. I really did enjoy learning about the different advertising on the cars and seeing how they were all presented back then. But I thought it was very interesting how VW used the word “lemon” to describe their vehicle when it was used in such a negative way. It did draw people's attention though when seeing this brand describe their product like that. I am still very interested to hear more about advertising and the design of logos and how websites are created.
03/02/2020 Journal Entry - Nik B.
I believe we are in an age in which we are regarded by companies as nothing more than sources of data. Personally, I am against “targeted ads” as they appear to be intrusive. I feel as if the “tool” I use every day should not be bombarded by corporations attempting to make money on the amount of “clicks.” I find this frustrates me the most when I am intending on purchasing a product on Amazon and I then see similar products as ads on other websites the next day.
Today we were introduced to the basics and essentials of advertising. We began with the big ideas and principles consisting of older pre-creative revolution advertisements. We also discussed how our behaviors and emotions are manipulated through advertising. From there we shifted our focus to the Creative Revolution where we studied mainly Volkswagen ads. These ads brought us insight on how the industry shifted and took on new forms of getting into the consumers brain. Furthermore, we finished our day by learning about research and its importance. We were shown examples of how advertisements can be drastically altered even within the final phases of the project due to focus groups. I left the classroom today thinking more about the difference between benefits and features. I have not given much thought to the contrast between the two meanings until today.

I think that it’s a very smart business plan to target buyers without them knowing. They may just think it's a coincidence if they don’t really think about it or look into it. For the buyer’s sake, I think it’s creepy and me knowing that everything I do on my phone or computer gets saved to a personal cloud with what I have looked up or shopped for.
In the fashion industry shoes and the different styles are really evolving. Some big-name brands are selling abnormal looking shoes that people with more money than others can afford and style to their own advanced style. Gucci shoes are more extravagant than shoes from Toms or Vans.

Journal 1: We talked about different ways of advertising from commercials in the 60’s to looking at how advertising agencies market to their consumers through short films or colored images.
Journal Entry - John H.
I think targeted marketing is intended for good, but taken the wrong way a lot of the time it can be like stalking and following. Targeting is simply there to sell you a product that in your past you had liked or looked at and if you put your information online you can't expect it to be safe and not used.
Rolex used people heading out on expeditions to test the watch at the same time to show its strength and durability. I think this is a very good tactic because you are showing it in field tests not simulated lab experiments.
Unlike Rolex, the Heuer brand just talks about the new automatic movement in the watch. Unless you’re a purest this means a lot to you. The average consumer only has to decipher whether they want a watch with a battery or not.
Day 1
The key things of day one that I took away were the ads and how persuasive and the amount of strategy that goes into an ad. Also, how impactful just a few words accompanied with the right photo or video can be with the right amount of information.
Day 2 - Assignment: Promote a brand. Leanna C.

Trying to fly under the radar in a town where all eyes are on you.
The advantage of growing up in a small town where everybody knows everybody.
When wanting to do your own thing it gets challenging. I look at it like a fish
in a glass, swimming in circles, slashing their tail trying to get out.
It's trapped. While on display for everyone to see.

This doesn't at all describe my life or who I am, but I do theatre because I like it, because I like Mrs. Grella and because I wanna be good at art. Originally, it meant I didn't have to do sports. It's fun. I like musicals and plays and I like the stories they tell, it's fun to put yourself into characters.

I believe I would be able to help your company as an intern because of my work ethic and creativity. I am able to provide a unique perspective while embodying company morals and goals. As a teenager in the world we live in I am socially pushed to consistently advertise myself on social media. For me to be successful, it requires a deeper understanding of social trends and what is popular.
