About me and why I chose to research the intellectually disabled

My name is Tressa Murphy, and I am currently a senior at Fontbonne. I am a part of the Student Council, Student Ambassadors Club, and Varsity soccer, basketball, and softball teams! Although I have not personally experienced this injustice, I have been able to gain secondhand experience through my Aunt Sarah, who was born with developmental disabilities. Sarah has been blessed with a strong support system encouraging her involvement in school, work, and athletics. Throughout my life, Sarah and I have grown a strong bond. This bond motivated me to volunteer in programs designed for people living with intellectual disabilities, such as TOPsoccer, Camp Fatima, and The Special Olympics. Through these programs, I was brought to the realization that not all people with intellectual disabilities are blessed with a support system. This realization not only encouraged me to continue volunteering with the intellectually disabled but to bring awareness to the injustices they face every day.
