Media Center
Riverview Elementary School's library & media center is a place where all Rockets are welcome and can come to enjoy learning.
My philosophy as your school librarian is to help to instill a love of literacy and learning into my students, provide information to all children and their families, teach students how to find resources that enable them to be able to research, and help them to develop critical thinking skills that they will use throughout their lifetimes.
I am dedicated to following Rudine Sims Bishop’s philosophy of ensuring that all students are provided books that function as windows, mirrors, and doors. Bishop uses "Mirrors, Windows and Sliding Glass Doors" as an analogy to discuss the importance of diversity in books and the authors who write them. Sims says, "We need books in which children can see reflections of themselves – but also look through and see other worlds.”
Library Schedule
Riverview's Media Center currently operates on a Fixed Schedule. All students (Pre-k thru 5th grade) will visit the media center each week. Library is 45 minutes long with an average of 15-20 minutes for checking out books, and an average of 20-25 minutes for instruction and student engagement. Students learn to independently pick appropriate reading material based on their own interests. Class visits focus on learning library skills, finding and reading books students enjoy and learning about topics of interest.
