From the desk of Mrs. Cochran (patricia.cochran@fivetowns.net)

Hello to you all! I hope you are well and are feeling supported during this time of transition - certainly a learning curve for us all!

As we continue our journey though this unprecedented time please keep in mind that I am here to support you with any needs you might have and can be reached at the email address noted above. I have also posted a list of community resources (among other things) on the School Counseling page within the HES Home Learning site - be sure to check it out. If nothing else, some of the Brainercise activities are good for a laugh!

To the students - what have you been up to these last few weeks? How have you been adjusting? What fun ways are you staying in contact with each other? Send me an email and let me know - it would be great to hear from you!

A few reminders for Rising 9th graders:

A google form was sent to each of you on 4/1/20. Please complete this form as soon as possible. This information will assist me when I begin working on homeroom assignments with the other counselors.

Also, I will be sending out information regarding the G/T screening process this week to those of you registered for Honors Integrated Humanities. Please keep an eye on your inbox for that information.

That is all for now…

Be well and carry on! ~Mrs. C

From the desk of Mrs. Walsh (liza.walsh@fivetowns.net)

Hello Everyone!

I miss you all so much and especially miss putting books in your hands! If any of you are in a book drought and have nothing to read, please email me or visit our catalog to browse what we have at the library. I can have books available for you to pick up on Mondays. If you would like to place a hold, email me for your log-in information. Here is the library website on our remote learning website: Library website There are links to the cloud library which you can access if you have a library card from any public library. Also, check out audible as they are giving tons of audio books away for free.

Feel free to email me if you’ve read a really great book and want to tell me about it! I’ve been rereading Harry Potter and it’s been great!

I’m going to be starting Middle School Creative Writing this week so will be sending out an email for sign ups. It is scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 and will be on zoom.

I’ve also found some great writing resources that I’d like to share:

The author of The Benefits of Being an Octopus, Ann Braden gives a three part writing lesson here. The title is “What to write when you don’t know what to write!”

And one of my favorite authors, Kate DiCamillo has some writing lessons here.

Keep reading and please let me know if you need books! It makes me so happy to be able to keep getting books out! And remember, "Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."

From the desk of Mrs. Cooper (jackie.cooper@fivetowns.net)

I am posting resources and videos on my google site that you can see on the HES Home Learning page. This is a great time to explore whatever creative interests you have. Some of you are quite the “Bob Ross” students, some of you are great knitters, and some take great photos. I’d love to see what you create. I’m happy to post your projects on my site, so others may be inspired, or just be in awe of your greatness. If you wish me not to post, let me know when you send me your project image.

The school is open on Mondays. I’m happy to get supplies for you if you need them. Let me know what you would like by Thursday, so I may get those supplies to you. I will put them out in the lobby with it clearly labeled with your name.

Lastly, I miss you all. I hope you are all staying healthy. Remember it is important to take outside breaks. Self-care is crucial. Stay well!

From the desk of Madame Sisk (hannah.sisk@fivetowns.net)

Bonjour! I miss seeing all of you in French class. I have posted several resources on the French page that you can check out. Click here for the link. A few subsections of the website that are worth noting:

  • Duolingo: You should all be familiar with Duolingo. It’s a great way to keep up your French skills. I posted a video at the top of the French page under “Messages from Madame Sisk” explaining how to get the most out of Duolingo (Learn, Stories and Podcasts). If you can’t remember your login, please email me.

  • Culture: There are several fun links that you can check out -- including tours of Paris and a recipe for crêpes. If you try out the recipe, send me a photo and I will post it on the website! If you do not want your photo posted, please let me know.

  • French Music: I have included links to several of the songs we listened to together in class, and am continually adding more as I find them. Check them out! I’ve discovered a few songs that I have been enjoying myself. With the permission of an adult, see if you can find more music in French -- send it my way (school appropriate, of course!) and I will add it to our page so that your classmates may listen as well.

Lastly, I know that this has been a huge adjustment for everyone. Take care of yourself (I know everyone is telling you this, but it’s so important). Get outside and off of your screens as much as you possibly can. Play a board game or do a puzzle. Know that I am thinking of each and every one of you!

From the desk of Mrs. Burcalow (shelly.burcalow@fivetowns.net)

Everyone should have their instrument and method book at home. I put them out on the essentials table when school closed. We are not going to be working on band music at this time.

This is a really good time to improve your skills on your instrument.

  • Start on exercise number 61 on page 14.

  • Try to do a new piece each time you practice.

  • Play it several times before you go on.

  • Don’t forget there is a fingering chart on page 46.

Good luck and happy practicing. I am excited to hear each of you play these songs when we get together again!

From the desk of Mr. Payson (jeff.payson@fivetowns.net)

Hey Middle Schoolers! I have sent an invite via email to a Google classroom designated for each grades’ individual Health class. Please join that as soon as you can. This will be the “landing site” for any assignments that may be posted in the near future. As school is going to be happening remotely, I will post my Health curriculum for your class soon, with more specific instructions for each class.

An “Essentials Team Activity Checklist” was emailed to each student/family. This document has 24 activities that you can perform at home (4 from each of your Essentials classes: Art, French, Music, Guidance, Library, and Health/PE). Hopefully this gives you a chance to work on a few skills while at home.

I also posted a video on the Hope Elementary Facebook page (week #5) and challenged any students to take a picture/video of themselves doing any physical activity and post it to that Facebook video in the comments section. It’s fine if you or your family doesn’t have Facebook, you could just email me instead if you want, and if it’s okay (jeff.payson@fivetowns.net). Thanks, and I hope everyone is well.

From the desk of Mrs. Cochran (patricia.cochran@fivetowns.net)

Hello again! It’s hard to believe that it has only been 5 weeks since we were all together at school - it seems like so much longer than that. I hope each one of you made it through the storm ok and were able to enjoy the sunshine today. Here are a few suggestions for you as you prepare to push through this final week of virtual learning before April vacation.

Begin each day with a game plan. Make a list of the tasks you would like to/need to complete for that day. Check each item off as you complete it and bask in the sense of success you feel as you get things done!

Connect with your peers and teachers. An easy way to do this is to try and attend the Zoom sessions listed at the beginning of this newsletter. Should Zoom not be an option for you, reach out via email to let us and your friends know what you have been up to. We really enjoy hearing from you!

Refresh after each work session - Zoom or otherwise. To do this, step away from your workstation and/or computer. If you are able to, step outside for some fresh air. Get a nutritious snack/meal. Go for a walk. Stretch. Give yourself a pep talk. Laugh. Whatever it is you need to help yourself (and your mind) feel ready for the next task on your list - do it!

Recharge after every day by getting quality sleep (8-9 hours to be exact). To achieve this try shutting down electronics no less than 30 minutes before you plan to go to bed. If that doesn’t work try extending your digital curfew to an hour before bed. Having trouble sleeping? Develop a sleep hygiene routine to help unwind from the day - journal, read or try a sleep story or mediation using the Calm app.

Most of all, make everyday count. You are enduring a substantial change in all areas of your life and you will continue to experience an array of emotions each day of this journey. Please be kind to yourself (and others). Try to name what you are feeling, in order to tame it. To do this, share your experiences with someone, journal about them and let them go. Remember, YOU’VE GOT THIS! And as always, should there come a day when you feel like you don’t, reach out - I am here for you!

Be well and carry on! ~Mrs. C

From the desk of Mrs. Walsh (liza.walsh@fivetowns.net)

Hello! I hope you all have power by now. We lost power for a couple of days and it was hard!

I will be going into school Monday morning to gather books so If any of you need something to read, please email me or visit our catalog to browse what we have at the library by Monday morning. I can have books available for you to pick up on Mondays. If you would like to place a hold, email me for your log-in information. Here is the library website on our remote learning website: Library website There are links to the cloud library which you can access if you have a library card from any public library. Also, check out audible as they are giving tons of audio books away for free.

I am thinking about starting a book club/ book chat where we share what we have been reading and recommend books to friends. Let me know if this is something you are interested in being a part of!

We had a nice Middle School Creative Writing last week where we did some prompts, wrote 6 word memoirs and have an assignment to write a poem for National Poetry month. We are hoping to compile some of our writing into a virtual magazine called “Quaran-ZIne.”

Creative writing is scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 and will be on zoom. You have to let me know if you want to join though so I can send you an invite.

Bonjour! I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the snow.

  • Make sure to check out the “Essentials Team Activity Checklist” from all of your Essentials teachers. You should have received a copy from your Crew teacher, but if you aren’t able to find it, please let me know and I will get it to you!

  • Have you seen the new weekly video series -- “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait pendant le week-end?” I am making a video each weekend to share with you what I’m doing to stay busy (it’s in French and English!). I’ll be uploading a new one every Tuesday to our French website (under “Messages from Madame Sisk”): https://sites.google.com/fivetowns.net/hes-home-learning/french?authuser=0

Here is last weeks’ newsletter in case you missed it:

Passes une bonne semaine (have a great week)!

MS Chorus students, It is time to enjoy singing again! I miss making music with all of you. We had almost perfected Walk Through Life in February. It is available for you to sing and follow the music at the following website:

From the desk of Mr. Ha (oai.ha@fivetowns.net)

Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a nice break. Since I was not able to travel as planned, I managed to keep myself busy with various to-do tasks around the house. I finally got to an electrical project that had been on my list since 2017. I had to use a bunch of math to build a garden gate to keep my sheep out. I had to add and subtract rational numbers (fractions), evaluate radicals (square roots), and applied the pythagorean theorem to cut diagonal braces for the gate corners. It goes to show, middle school math really comes in handy!

Please remember to complete any outstanding assignments in Google Classroom and ALEKS before your scheduled Zoom sessions.

From the desk of Mr. Amundsen (colin.amundsen@fivetowns.net)

Mr. Amundsen posts all assignments and accompanying materials on Google Classroom.

Welcome back from April vacation! Although it was perhaps not as busy as you may have desired it to be, I do hope you found time to enjoy the great outdoors, relax and spend some quality time with your family. As you prepare to jump back into remote learning, I felt it was appropriate to reiterate the suggestions I posted previously as they remain relevant and will hopefully encourage you to find balance in what will be the final push for this academic year:

And as always, should there come a day when you feel like you don’t, reach out - I am here for you!

well and carry on! ~Mrs. C

It was nice to see sunshine this weekend. I hope everyone was able to spend some time outdoors. I have been putting in a lot of work in the garden. There are lots of weeds already but we’re making steady progress. We spent Sunday morning canoeing on a stretch of the Marsh River. It was mostly very calm waters with a few sections of class I/II rapids. I foraged along the way and collected a decent amount of groundnuts (Apios americana). They are potato-like tubers of a legume indigenous North America. I’m looking forward to making a tasty meal with them. If you haven’t done so, please remember to complete your Google Classroom assignments. I will post a short ALEKS assignment tomorrow (Monday). I look forward to seeing everyone during our Zoom sessions!

I also posted a video on the Hope Elementary Facebook page and challenged any students to take a picture/video of themselves doing any physical activity and post it to that Facebook video in the comments section. It’s fine if you or your family doesn’t have Facebook, you could just email me instead if you want, and if it’s okay (jeff.payson@fivetowns.net). Thanks, and I hope everyone is well.

ATTENTION RISING 9th GRADER: High School Transition Happenings

May 13th @ 10:00 am: Students will be joined by Mr. Bode (Assistant Principal), Mr. Hart (Athletic Director), and a few current CHRHS students to discuss co-curriculuar opportunities in athletics and clubs, as well as high school life in general. Prior to this event I will send out a Google Form to help you identify questions you would like to ask during this time.

Please note that this Zoom meeting will replace your Crew meeting for that week.

May 18th (time to be determined): This year’s rising 9th graders will participate in a virtual step-up night. The proposed agenda for this event is as follows:

  • General Welcome from Mr. Marks, Director of Counseling

  • Meet and Greet (pictures of 9th-grade teachers)

  • Principal’s message

  • Words of Wisdom from current CHRHS students

  • Q&A

Given the virtual nature of this event, a Google Form will be sent out to students and parents prior to this event. Information/questions submitted via this form will be provided to Mr. Marks so that they may be addressed during this event.

Homeroom Preferences ASAP: If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete the homeroom preference form I sent out mid-April. This information will be used as I work with the other sending school counselors to create homeroom rosters for rising 9th-graders. If you no longer have the link, please email me so I can resend it.

Lastly, If you have any questions or concerns related your transition to CHRHS in the fall, please let me know. Although we can’t meet in person, I am still here and available to support you during this time.

Be well and carry on! ~Mrs. C

Hello!

I hope you had a nice weekend and enjoyed the sunshine!

Email and let me know if you would like to start the Bullet Journal Club again. I’ve talked to a few of you who have been doing some cool journaling.

We will be working on some pen pal buddy activities for the last month of school so I will keep you posted on that as it develops.

Creative writing is scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 and will be on zoom. You have to let me know if you want to join though so I can send you an invite.

Keep reading! Reading is a muscle and so keep at it. Even 20 minutes a day makes a huge difference. And finally, remember, "Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."

Have you seen the new Essentials Team Activity Checklist? You should have received a copy from your Crew teacher, but if you aren’t able to find it, please let me know and I will get it to you (hannah.sisk@fivetowns.net).

Have you seen the French weekly video series, “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait pendant le week-end?”? I am making a video each weekend to share with you what I’m doing to stay busy (it’s in French and English!). There will be a new one on Tuesday on our French website (under “Messages from Madame Sisk”): https://sites.google.com/fivetowns.net/hes-home-learning/french?authuser=0

Come across any new French songs? Let me know! I’ll add them to our French page (see website above if you’d like to check out what is already there).

As a reminder, you all have DuoLingo accounts! It’s a great way to keep your French skills sharp (even just 10 minutes a day is great practice!). If you can’t seem to log in, let me know and I will send you your username and password.

I hope you are all staying well. À la semaine prochaine !

From the desk of Mrs. Fagonde (danielle.fagonde@fivetowns.net)

Hi! This past weekend was not very nice for being outside. Hopefully you spent some time with a good book. I have been reading a lot. It’s nice to cross off books on my reading list. I also baked chocolate chip cookies and French baguettes.

I know you are missing your friends and probably bored at home. Hang in there! We are all in this together. Try to use this time to create healthy habits, such as exercising, eating healthy, and reading every day. When the going gets tough, the tough get going!

Have a great week! Let me know if I can do anything to help you.

From the desk of Mr. Ha (oai.ha@fivetowns.net)

Happy Mother’s Day! What a cold and blustery weekend. We still managed to get out on the water though. We canoed about an eight mile section of the St. George River from Ayer Park in Union to Payson Park in Warren. This was my first time canoeing this river and I was really blown away by the amount of wildlife along this section. We saw eagles, hawks, ospreys, great blue herons, turkeys, cormorants, and countless ducks and songbirds. Besides the occasional wind gusts, it was a very easy paddle until the very end where we encountered some class II rapids. We had to portage over a steep embankment to get around a class III rapid with a 3ft drop that would have likely swamped our canoe.

For this week, things will be the same as always. Be sure to complete your assignments before our Zoom sessions and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you have any questions. Four more weeks! Let’s finish strong.

Hey Middle Schoolers! I have added some activities/assignments that we would be doing if we were in school. The assignments have been added to your respective Health/PE class on Google Classroom. Most of you have checked your emails and joined the classes, but not all of you. The way that Health class has worked in the past is to build up knowledge each year, culminating in 8th grade with having four years of information (5-8th grade).

If you finish your checklist, send one of your Essential teachers an email, including a picture or video if you want, and we’ll send you something back!

There are still tennis balls and jump ropes at school that are available for students to take.

I hope that everyone is finding ways to stay healthy and active during this time away from school. Take care!.....Mr. Payson

Did you try last week’s “Upcycle Challenge”? This week’s challenge is Themed Drawing Challenge****

One thing that is important for you all to do, and many people have shared this in different ways, is to keep some sort of journal or scrapbook for this time. This is historic. I included this suggestion again on the Essential Team’s checklist because I think it is really important. As much as you think you will remember, you will forget some of the details. This journal could include things you did when you were at home, or maybe a great recipe you created.

Here is a recipe I made recently:

Flourless peanut butter chocolate chip cake

½ cup peanut butter

½ cup sugar

3 eggs

½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ mini chocolate chips

Pour into a 9x5 loaf pan or a 6” round cake pan.

Bake 30-40 mins @350 degrees

It will be moist like a lighter banana bread. There were only crumbs left on the counter.

Please remember to check out my google site. I post weekly art challenges and resources. Send me pictures of what you create. I’d love to see them. I’m happy to post your creations as well, just let me know it is okay to post. HES Home Learning for Art

Let me know if you need any supplies by Thursday, and I will provide you those supplies on Monday.

Miss you all!

From the desk of Mrs. Fagonde (danielle.fagonde@fivetowns.net)

Hi! I hope you had a nice break from remote learning and were able to step away from the screens and get outside for some part of the weekend. I enjoyed playing a few rounds of golf. Golf is a sport I recently found a love for. I like it because it’s an outdoor activity, I can play with my children, and it’s an activity that requires mindfulness. It keeps me very focused, so it’s a nice break from everything.

We only have three more weeks left of remote learning. I know you are ready for it to end, but let’s persevere and finish strong. Have a great week! Let me know if I can do anything to help you.

From the desk of Mr. Payson (jeff.payson@fivetowns.net)

Hey Middle Schoolers!

Payson

From the desk of Mrs. Cochran (patricia.cochran@fivetowns.net)

ATTENTION RISING 9th GRADERS

High School Transition REMINDERS

May 18th (time to be determined): This year’s rising 9th graders will participate in a virtual step-up night. This event will be pre-recorded and I will be sharing the link to this event with students/families once provided by the high school.

The proposed agenda for this event is as follows:

  • General Welcome from Mr. Marks, Director of Counseling

  • Meet and Greet (pictures of 9th-grade teachers)

  • Principal’s message

  • Words of Wisdom from current CHRHS students

  • Q&A

All responses received through the google form I sent out last week have been passed along to the team.

Bee well and carry on! ~Mrs. C

From the desk of Mrs. Walsh (liza.walsh@fivetowns.net)

Hi everyone! I hope you had a nice weekend!

As usual, I will be going into school Monday morning to gather books so If any of you need something to read, please email me or visit our catalog to browse what we have at the library by Monday morning. I can have books available for you to pick up after 10:00AM on Monday. If you would like to place a hold, email me for your log-in information. Here is the library website on our remote learning website: Library website

I am working on my order for next year’s books so please let me know if you have read anything good or if you have heard of a new book coming out that you would like us to have. I am reading a book called Chirp by Kate Messner about cricket farming! Camden and Rockport Libraries are both opening in the next few weeks for curbside pick-up. Here are their websites to browse the catalogs. Camden Public Library and Rockport Public Library. Also, Miss Amy at Camden hosts a weekly zoom for Maine Student Book Award finalists.

The winning book for our belated March Madness was The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas! Alden Howard is the winner with the closest bracket! Go Alden! I will be contacting you with a prize.

One thing I did this week was to make a list of five things I am really interested in curious about and I started a research project on one of them. Check out some other ideas for things to do on the checklist created by the Essentials teachers at the end of this newsletter.

Creative writing is scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 on zoom. Remember that you have to let me know if you want to join so I can send you an invite. Here are some cool writing links that we like to visit:

Pobble 365 and Story Starter

Keep reading, even 20 minutes a day makes a huge difference. And finally, remember, "Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."

From the desk of Mrs. Cooper (jackie.cooper@fivetowns.net)

From the desk of Madame Sisk (hannah.sisk@fivetowns.net)

Bonjour !

I hope you are all doing well and getting outside. Soon the blackflies will be gone and the days will be a bit warmer! I have been spending a lot of my free time in my vegetable and flower gardens.

Your Essentials teachers and I created a new Activity Checklist. It’s a great way to keep up your skills through short activities. Check it out at the end of this newsletter!

Have you seen the French weekly video series, “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait pendant le week-end?”? I am making a video each weekend to share with you what I’m doing to stay busy (it’s in French and English!). There are four now up on our French website (under “Messages from Madame Sisk”), and I will be adding another on Tuesday. Check them out and see if you can understand what I say! https://sites.google.com/fivetowns.net/hes-home-learning/french?authuser=0

As a reminder, you all have DuoLingo accounts. It’s an excellent way to keep your French skills sharp (10 minutes a few times a week makes a difference). If you’re unable to log in, let me know and I will send you your username and password.

If you have any questions, please reach out. Prends soin de toi (take care). À la semaine prochaine!

MS Chorus students, It is time to enjoy singing again! I miss making music with all of you. We had almost perfected Walk Through Life in February. It is available for you to sing and follow the music at the following website:
