Internships vs. Job Shadows vs. Mentorships
Internships
An internship is a temporary work experience that allows students to gain exposure to a particular career field, learn practical skills, and make professional connections. For high school students, internships provide an early opportunity to explore potential career paths and get hands-on experience in a real-world environment. Occasionally, internships may require additional applications and interviews. Students are given applied academic credit for participating in internships.
Job Shadows
A job shadow is a career exploration activity where a student follows or "shadows" a professional in their workplace for a short period of time (usually a few hours to a day). It gives high school students a chance to observe firsthand what a typical day is like in a particular career field without directly participating in tasks. This experience allows students to learn more about the career they're interested in and understand the day-to-day responsibilities of someone in that role.
Mentorships
A mentorship is a supportive, learning-focused relationship where an experienced individual (the mentor) guides, advises, and shares knowledge with a student (the mentee) to help them grow professionally. It involves one-on-one sessions where the mentor offers advice, answers questions, and provides constructive feedback on specific skills or challenges the mentee is facing. The goal is to foster the mentee's development.
