Problem to be solved:
Concrete is the most common and versatile construction material. Budding engineers who deal with concrete need to have hands-on experience of concrete making, to understand its quality and behavior. Concrete making with variations in characteristics of cement, proportioning of aggregates, chemistry of material and chemical admixtures, control of water binder ratio, is a challenge to any civil engineer.
CubiX @Incepto’22 -FISAT offers Students of Civil Engineering to experience through this competition, the art and science of producing good quality concrete.
Rules and Guidelines for contest and design:
Use of Materials (will be supplied from the college)
Coarse and fine aggregates from natural sources shall comply with the requirements of IS:383. The maximum size of coarse aggregates, gravel or crushed stones shall not exceed 20 mm.
Cement shall be Portland Pozzolana Cement (IS 1489:1991, Part I).
Chemical admixtures which conform to IS 9103:1999 as applicable may be added.
Quality of water shall be ensured before use.
Material and its properties will be given at the venue.
Mix Design:
The mix shall be designed to achieve strength of 30 MPa on 28th day and appropriate strength as per the thumb rule, on 7th day test.
Mix design shall be done as per IS10262:2019 Concrete Mix Proportioning Guidelines.
Cube Specimen:
Cubical test specimens shall be of 150mm x 150mm x 150 mm in size within a tolerance limit of 2 mm, cast as monolithic one unit. Any reinforcement by provision of bars, fibers or mesh, impregnation with materials like any polymer, epoxy or any synthetic glues or similar binders or modifiers is not permissible.
Curing and age of cubes:
Minimum 7 days curing shall be done in clean fresh water at ambient temperature in accordance with relevant IS Codes.
Submission of entry:
A mix design report as per IS10262:2019 Concrete Mix Proportioning Guidelines shall be submitted at the end of event on 23/5/2022
Each Entry will be by a group of maximum four students.
Minimum 3 cubes shall be submitted with each entry.
Mark ID No. and 'X' on the upward face of the cubes to receive the test load.
Cubes damaged during casting/curing/handling will be rejected and Competitors shall have the responsibility of delivering the cubes in good condition.
Test of cubes
Testing of cubes is scheduled at 10:00 hrs. on the date 30/5/2022 at Material Testing Lab, FISAT. At least one of the members of each team must be present at the time of testing.
Testing will be done as per 1S 516: 1959 Method of Tests for strength of Concrete.
The strength of 3 cubes in direct compression and the deviation of results among themselves shall also be considered for merit adjudged.
