Module 25
Masters in Teaching Multilingual Learners
Masters in Teaching Multilingual Learners
March 21, 2021
The first module in my Masters portion of the program at Moreland University.
As I write this, the highlight of the modules so far have been learning about the different frameworks for language learning, to include the socio-cultural competence. I was impressed at how just about every framework seemed to include ways to address and improve socio-cultural competence. I thought that some frameworks were just for assessments, but then I learned that they actually had a wider role in guiding schools language learning elements of curriculum. It's no surpise that this module is very enlightening as my introduction to the Multilingual Learners Masters. I have tried to keep up with the information and tasks by creating a system of folders in my own professional Google drive. Sorted by week within on ESL Masters labeled folder. Below are a couple of the activities where I produced something to submit.
This is the video that accompanied the definitions. I learned how to use Loom during the certification modules and I find it to be an easy, free, user-friendly tool to help with short video recordings that need both the screen and my video.
During our 3rd week of Module 25, we were to create and give a mini-assessment. After the VC for week 4, I realized I had put in a few of the recommended tools that would be helpful to a language learner (pictures, word bank). One point I learned is that we are all "language learners" at some point. We do not naturally acquire academic language in our everyday lives, and so it must be presented by educators in a way that makes it easier to acquire. The slides represent the assessment that was given and also the student's response and self-reflection on the final slide, to include what he thought he could add.
We have done two blog posts as part of our activities. I think I will choose to make blogs on a different account rather than Moreland University account because it will be easier to access or share access with someone (colleagues, future employers etc...). Here are the links below which are accessible to holders of Moreland University accounts.
I think some goals moving forward are to spend more time and attention on the structure and presentation of my submissions as well as to improve my web building skills, specifically how to create links within a website to pages in my website. As I have looked at other cohort submissions, I appreciate and have a better understanding because of their formatting and text structure. I feel this is one of the great things about Moreland is the ability to see other's submissions and to see other ways of doing things and to grow from that.
