Service learning is an integral part of the FIS community and curriculum, and provides authentic learning experiences that help our students grow into adaptable, socially responsible global citizens. Projects at FIS support both the local community and people around the globe.
We believe that everyone has a responsibility to contribute positively to society and the environment, and our students take great pride in their service work – learning along the way that they can have a positive impact in our world.
While many of the school's service learning projects have been active in the school for years FIS also supports new student initiatives each year that may respond to a current crisis or support student passions to make a difference in the local community or the world.
Student groups are supervised by faculty sponsors and all associated fundraising is deposited and monitored by the school’s accounting office. The major event of fundraising for many of the groups is the Applefest celebration that takes place at FIS each fall with games and booths operated by student groups.
To join a service group, just show up to one of their meetings. If you would like to continue attending, please let the leader know, as they take attendance at each meeting.
There are several options for accessing information for when each group meets. Each morning in the bulletin you will see when the groups meet on that day, you can access information in this site Service Groups at FIS (more details) and you can see each group's information on the main service wall in the Stroth center and from their individual bulletin boards in the main building.
The first step is to explore your idea to see if you can help support an existing group with your ideas or project. If your ideas is quite unique to what we have to offer, there is a form (see below) that can be filled out that outlines the main ideas of what is involved in a service group or club development.
Important information:
The group proposal submitted will be evaluated by the Service Learning Coordinator and a team of students. It is important for this group will be a sustainable idea.
NOTE: If your idea is similar/related to another group's mission, we will encourage you to connect with their leaders to collaborate on your ideas or project initiative.
A group will need to include a well articulated mission, clear action plan, connection to the UN SDG's, a calendar of potential events and multi-grade level participation.
The student leadership and adult mentor must also be strongly committed to the sustainability of the group.
Service groups: Each service group's focus is to build awareness for their cause. If you see that there will be a need for fundraising, see NOTE below.
Fundraising: If there is a interest in fundraising through a service group, this cannot happen until the second year of existence and then needs a thorough examination of the need to fundraise.
If you have any questions before developing your idea, please contact: Alicia_Chaplin@fis.edu
When the form is completed, please send an email to notify Mrs. Chaplin.
