2018

The nature club started 2016 by Mats deBoer as a group that wanted to have lunch together outdoors, maybe go on some walks and just appreciate the nature around FIS. It led in to the group getting more active and vocal and putting forth proposals for a school garden which they then got in 2018. Since then, it has been through active middle school involvement that regular maintenance of the garden takes place, however, under some high school leadership of former nature club students, House leaders got involved in starting some vegetable seedlings for a spring planting, planning the garden and its vision of having a grapevine lining the ramps along the parking lot and teachers started to use the space for science lessons. The environment and sustainability club grew out of nature club as students progressed into Upper School and they maintain the 'activist' element of the club- providing education and doing some fundraising initiatives.

The FIS chapter of Interact was founded on March 19th, 2018, by a handful of students, and was sponsored by the Rotary clubs Rotary Club Oberursel, and Rotary Club Frankfurt/Main-Friedensbrücke. Since this club has started we have planned a blood drive, been at world and apple fest, done a flue vaccine awareness project, which included making a flyer all about getting vaccinated (which was then translated into different languages) and making a library display focused on vaccinations and diseases like the flue and participated in the service fairs. Recently we planned a jewelry sale in order to raise awareness and funds for Youth-oriented community organisation, with the donations going toward funding initiatives for educating black and brown youth, such as programs for coding, activism camps, and providing books for schools.

Student Advisory Board was started by Seo Jin (Reyna) Lim.

Unitylight was founded in 2018 by former IB students Jimin Ko & Minwhee Kim under the name of “deLuxe dancers” to allow FIS and local refugee peers at the Internationale Verein Windrose to learn and perform Kpop dance covers. Internationale Verein Windrose, a non-governmental organization works to aid new immigrant families in Oberursel to integrate into the local community. Their girl’s club, aims at facilitating girls ages 12-17 with the creative means to build on their self-exploration and empowerment throughout their coming of age from children to young adults. The leaders offered monthly dance sessions from 5pm to 6pm at the FIS Oberursel campus to teach the girls Kpop dance covers. To engage students at FIS, they first formed deLuxe&friends to teach Big Bang’s “Bang Bang Bang” to 9-12th students on Friday’s from 3:15pm to 4pm. In spring of 2019, the IB group focused on learning the cover to BTS’s “Fake Love” which they performed at the Girl Up Charity Fashion Show as part of their Creativity/ Activity/ Service project. Continuing into the next school year, the group rebranded itself as “deLuxe Dancers”to teach BTS’s “Boy with Luv” to 6-12th grade, meeting Fridays afterschool. In fall of 2019, the group learned BTS’s “Boy with Luv”, which they performed at the International Day Assembly. The same song was taught to the members of the Internationale Verein Windrose girls club throughout the winter. In February of 2020, the group’s leadership was handed over to Florentine Winkler and Minjeong Jeong, during which Florentine began to teach Itzy’s “Dalla Dalla”. Due to the pandemic, the group’s activities were moved online to continue learning the song’s choreography, which was recorded for the end of year assembly, featuring in the middle school year summary video.

Illusion was started in 2017 by Hannah Youm. It was originally started with the intention of sharing Korean pop culture and dance and while that is still part of our goal, we also now focus on a UN sustainability goal each year to express and spread awareness on through our dances. The first ILLUSION concert was held in SY 2018-19 and it focused on suicide prevention (the goal of mental health). The second and most recent concert held was in January 2020. This concert was the ILLUSION "Love Yourself" concert respectively, focusing on self love which again fell under the category of mental health. In addition to this, the group has also participated in many school events, uploading dance performances on social media platforms, and more.

The Peer Tutoring Network has grown in size, more students are aware of its availability, and it has become more multifaceted and organized.

2015

Girl Up was started in the Fall of 2015 by two 10th grade students- Kanika Birla and Sedona Redlbacher.

The FIS Genders and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) began in the 2015-2016 school year as the State Your Question (SYQ) student group. The original mission of this group was to "ask the questions that we are not asking but need to in the FIS upper school." After one year, however, the student leaders, Delphine Siegel and Eva Callens, along with the faculty advisors, Mr. Robin Neal and Ms. Irini Losoff, rebranded the group as a GSA to more accurately reflect our aim: to promote equality, raise awareness, and fight for LGBTQ+ rights. The formation and focus of the GSA at FIS has been "on the shoulders" of other GSA groups. We specifically want to thank the GSA at Berlin Brandenburg International School for their example and mentorship. The group has created clearer communication for the FIS community. GSA members and advisers are regularly asked for ideas, questions, and collaboration on topics of equity and inclusion. GSA members talked to faculty and encouraged them to display safe space stickers in classrooms. The group collaborated with the administration to promote LGBTQ+ topics and inclusivity training in curriculum and professional development. The group has also held Pride weeks and other celebration campaigns on campus
