Applying for Insurance & Assistance
Prepare to make an Insurance Claim
Keep all receipts during your evacuation.
Policy provisions, including deductibles, vary by company, and residents should check with their insurance company or agent as soon as possible to confirm coverage, limits, and any other limitations and documentation requirements. Most insurance policies also typically include Additional Living Expense (ALE) coverage.
Document the date, time, and names of any insurance company employees you speak to regarding your coverage.
Consumers should make sure any insurance agent or public adjuster offering their services has a valid license by checking online with the Department of Insurance.
Download the Department’s Top 10 Tips for Wildfire Claimants (also available in Spanish, Mandarin, and Vietnamese), which includes information about claiming ALE benefits.
Under existing law, public adjusters cannot solicit business for seven calendar days after a disaster.
Apply for FEMA Assistance
After making a claim with their insurance provider, the first step residents can take to jumpstart their recovery is to apply for FEMA assistance. There are three ways to apply:
Online at DisasterAssistance.gov. If you have access to the internet and your electronic devices have power, applying online is the easiest, fastest and most convenient way to apply.
On the FEMA App for mobile devices.
Calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. Calls are accepted every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Help is available in most languages. If you use a relay service, such as video relay (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA the number for that service. To view an accessible video about how to apply visit: FEMA Accessible: Registering for Individual Assistance - YouTube.
SBA Disaster Assistance
The SBA is providing disaster assistance to homeowners, renters, nonprofits, and businesses of all sizes impacted by the wildfires and straight-line winds in California. For more information visit, Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Assistance.
Applicants are encouraged to apply online for a disaster loan. Please call us at 800‐659‐2955 or schedule an in-person appointment if you have any questions.
Tax and Fee Relief
Misfortune and Calamity Tax Relief
You may be eligible for tax relief if your property is damaged or destroyed by a calamity, such as fire or flooding. To qualify, you must file an Application for Reassessment: Property Damaged or Destroyed by Misfortune or Calamity (M&C) Form ADS-820 with the Assessor’s Office within 12 months from the date the property was damaged or destroyed. The loss must exceed $10,000 of current market value. For questions or to submit an M&C claim, please call (213) 974-8658.
DMV Fee Suspension
For qualifying individuals impacted by the Eaton, Palisades, Hurst, Woodley, and Linda fires, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has waived the fees for those who have lost their driver's license, ID card, vehicle registration, or title. Sticker replacements can now be requested at no cost. Deadlines for vehicle registrations and title transfers are extended, and no late penalties will be applied during this period. For more information, visit the DMV webpage by clicking here or call 1 (800) 777-0133.
