Using Place Value
1. Break your number up and label the place value for each digit
2. Compare your number moving left to right (Hundreds to ones) just like you read left to right. Remember that a 9 in your ones is not as powerful as a 3 in your hundreds.
Using Base Ten Pieces
1. Build both numbers using the interactive base ten pieces or draw out your model for each number. Start your model with Hundreds on top and ones on bottom.
2. Compare the model top to bottom, comparing the number of hundreds mats first.
3. We could stop at the hundreds place with this model because one had more hundreds than the other. If both numbers have the same number of hundreds move on to the tens.
4. Same number in the hundreds and tens, move on to the ones and compare.
