One centimeter grid paper-Use this to draw out shapes and find the perimeter and area. (See examples below of how it can be used)
One inch grid paper- Can be cut into 1 inch squares to build physical models to solve for area and perimeter. (See example with tiles shown below)

Examples of How to Use the Tools from Resources
Problem: Find the perimeter and area for a rectangle with the length of 4 and width of 3.
Steps for using centimeter grid paper to find perimeter:
1. Draw your rectangle out on the grid paper
2. Label all your sides with measurement along skeleton marks (lines along the perimeter to mark each unit)
3. Add all sides together (Remember double facts may help you add faster)

1. Draw your rectangle out on grid paper
2. Label the dimensions
3. Write your multiplication equation following the rule (width x length = area) and solve picking a strategy pictured below:
Using 1 inch tiles to find perimeter (We use tiles in class you can use 1 inch squares cut from grid paper instead of tiles):
1. Build a model
2. Label your sides
3. Add all the sides (using your double facts to help you)
Using 1 inch tiles to find area using the model you built above
1. Pick one of the strategies shown in the pictures to find your area
Activity to Practice Area and Perimeter (Remember Area= Width x Length and Perimeter=Add up all the sides)
1. Roll two dice or roll one dice dice. Use this virtual dice if you do not have dice at home.
2. Build a rectangle with the one inch tiles you cut out of graph paper.
3. Find the area of the rectangle multiplying the length x width
4. Find the perimeter of the rectangle adding the lengths of all the sides
5. Make it a competition against a friend or family member. The person with the rectangle with the greatest area wins the round, or perhaps smallest perimeter, if your area is greater than your perimeter you get a point. You can make up your own rules.
