The National Pledge
Our Pledge
We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society
based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity
and progress for our nation.
Its origin
When Singapore became an independent nation on 9 August 1965, there was a pressing need for the young nation to forge a common identity and sense of belonging among citizens of different races and religions. The National Pledge aimed to inculcate national consciousness and patriotism in schools, and was first recited in August 1966.
