Hello, Husky students and families,

Please continue to check out the Counselor’s Corner page regularly on our Google site for additional announcements from the counseling office.  We have a few updates for this week that we want to make you aware of.

Thanks for your attention to this information!

Scheduling Update

The past couple of weeks, counselors held individual meetings with all current 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to answer questions and discuss their scheduling requests for the 2024-25 school year.  Course requests may be viewed, but not adjusted, under Class Registration in Student PowerSchool.  If Parents/Guardians have concerns about student requests, please reach out to their counselor by Wednesday, March 6th.  Now that the request phase of the scheduling process has closed, the master schedule is in the process of being developed based on the requests received.  This will determine which classes are offered, when, and who will teach them.  Thank you for your patience as this next phase of the scheduling process begins.

Junior Conferences

Junior conferences can now be scheduled again with counselors.  Junior conferences offer time for students to discuss their post-high school goals with their counselor.  Students are encouraged to review their assessments in Naviance prior to this meeting and come prepared with questions to discuss regarding their post-secondary plans.  To schedule a Junior Conference, students must fill out the form below.

November 17, 2023

We have several important updates for this Friday.  Thanks for your attention to this information!

12th Grade

Counselors are still sending transcripts via Naviance for seniors who request transcripts after the Early Action deadline of November 1. If a senior requests a new or additional transcript via Naviance, we ask the student to please also email their counselor that this request has been submitted.  Counselors are not monitoring requests in Naviance as regularly now that the November 1st deadline has passed.

11th grade classroom visits:

As a complement to the Junior Planning Night held at the Fine Arts Center last week, counselors visited with juniors through their English classes to discuss the post high school planning process.  Our visit in classrooms included helping juniors re-familiarize themselves with the Naviance college and career readiness software and developing a college planning timeline.  Through Naviance, juniors completed the AchieveWorks Intelligence inventory along with AchieveWorks Personality assessment.  Ask your student(s) to share their results with you!  Through their results, students are able to see matching careers and the amount and type of preparation (education) required for each career.  Students then found which colleges offer the majors required for their recommended careers and learned more about the admissions process for them.  Counselors also shared The FHN College and Career Prep Timeline with students.  It provides students and families with previews to what the post high school planning process entails and recommendations for what students can be doing each “season” to further their planning research.

Junior Conferences

Junior conferences can now be scheduled with counselors.  Junior conferences offer time for students to discuss their post high school goals with their counselor.  Students are encouraged to review their assessments in Naviance prior to this meeting and come prepared with questions to discuss regarding their post-secondary plans.  A parent or guardian can also join the conversation.  To schedule a Junior Conference, students need to fill out the form linked below.

Request for a Junior Conference

PSAT Scores

11th graders have received their October PSAT scores.  Scores can be viewed via the students' College Board accounts.  This is the only way to view a student's score report.  If a student is unsure how to access their account, they will need to contact the College Board since the Counseling Office does not maintain student login credentials.

Sophomore Leadership Opportunities

My Lead and HOBY are two nomination based leadership opportunities for 10th graders.  These are longstanding organizations through which students can develop their leadership potential, grow as individuals, and have a positive impact on their school communities.  The Counseling Office will be accepting applications from 10th graders through November 30th.  If your student is interested, please encourage them to fill out the application form.

Second Semester Schedules

Semester two schedules can now be viewed in PowerSchool.  Please note that schedules have been finalized, and all schedule change requests were addressed prior to the start of the school year. If you believe you have an extenuating circumstance that necessitates a schedule change, a Google form will be provided the week after Thanksgiving for you to submit your request.  This is the only way for requesting a change.  Building administrators will review all requests and make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

AP Potential

As a part of the PSAT score report, students will also receive information on their “AP Potential” for specific AP courses.  This serves as a recommendation from the College Board for which AP courses a student might perform well in based upon their PSAT score.  Students should use this data, in addition to conversations with their current classroom teachers and counselors, to help inform their course selection this late winter 2024.  As a reminder, all students will receive recommendations from their current teachers on the subject area courses that are most appropriate for them based upon their classroom performance.  Students can expect this to happen in February.

KCTC Visits

Prospective students looking to enroll at KCTC for the 2024-2025 school year are highly encouraged to participate in an in-person visit to explore their program of interest. Due to high demand, these program visits fill up rapidly, so it is crucial for students to register as soon as possible. Please have your student contact Mrs. Hamilton in the Counseling for sign up information.  More information about KCTC can be found at their website.

Academic Support for Students

Tutoring is offered for all students Monday through Thursday in the media center immediately after school until approximately 3:40pm.  A more detailed schedule along with additional resources can be found here.

IXL is a resource that offers personalized recommendations for standardized testing preparation.  SAT study plans can be developed and can help students target the exact skills that will improve their test scores.  For additional information, visit here.  An FHPS Family Guide on the use of IXL can also be found here

Thank you,

FHN Counselors

10th graders:

KCTC is currently conducting visits for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. These visits aim to provide students with a comprehensive overview of all available programs, primarily targeting students who haven't yet decided on a specific program of interest.  These tours are ending October 26th.  Students can schedule a tour with Mrs. Hamilton in the counseling office.  Starting in November, they will also offer specialized tours for individual programs. For additional information about KCTC and the various programs offered by Kent ISD, please visit our website's dedicated page.

9th graders:

FHN Counselors held meetings at the start of October with all freshman students during their Biology classes. These "freshman chats" serve as a valuable opportunity for your student(s) to be introduced to their high school counselor and engage in discussions about achieving success at the high school level.  In addition, students engaged in our college and career readiness platform, Naviance. In Naviance, students participated in both a personality assessment and a career assessment.  Please ask your student to share their assessment results with you! For additional information regarding grade-level curriculum and counseling resources, please visit our counseling office's web page here.

11th Graders:

Mark your calendars: FHC Junior Planning Night - October 26, 2022 @ 6:00pm

This evening is designed to deliver relevant junior year college and postsecondary planning information.  In conjunction with what students receive through junior conferences from their counselor, it serves as an opportunity for students and families to hear consistent information.  We encourage all junior families to participate in this event to get critical information regarding their junior student’s postsecondary planning.  This year’s event will be at the Fine Arts Center and representatives from each high school in Forest Hills will be delivering content.  A representative from Kent ISD will also be present to present information on their programs.

Have a wonderful weekend,

FHN Counselors
