The first artifact, Librarian Scholarship, is an analysis of the requirements for tenure at two different R1 research universities; the David W. Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas and McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland were the two R1 institutions that I reviewed for this project. An R1 institution is a university that's classified as a "Doctoral University: Very High Research Activity" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education (American Council on Education, 2025).
Research for this artifact led me to the following interesting information:
It is essential for librarians to understand the roles that tenured and non-tenured-track positions offer
Librarians who are allowed to conduct research write scholarly communication as both the formal and informal works deepen one’s knowledge of the subject matter under review
AND librarians in a research institution regardless of tenure or lack of tenure track should garner a better understanding of their personal perceptions and biases towards the tenure or permanent placement before they began to apply to academic structures that utilize faculty positions within librarianship
