The second artifact, Faculty Support, describes three theoretical LibGuides designed to instruct faculty in various tools, services, and methods that may be relevant to their research. The following three topics continue to be particularly important at my current institution (Ferrum College, Ferrum, Virginia) as the library is working in conjunction with marketing and administration to correct some long-standing faculty habits when it comes to scholarly communication. The topics are as follows:
Dissemination and preservation of research output, specifically Ferrum’s different institutional repositories (Digital Library of Appalachia and Preservica)
Ethical /legal issues specifically looking at intellectual property issues regarding copyright
Open resources (OER/OA/OAR).
For each of these topics, I have stated to create LibGuides show casing the modules as they were designed within the project. For each of the topics above, learing outcomes were orgnaized as such:
Lesson Plan One: Dissemination and preservation of research output
By the end of this course...
Faculty will be able to explain the changing structures of scholarly communication preservation and dissemination;
Faculty will be able to differentiate between the business practices of different online preservation services already used by Ferrum College;
AND faculty will be able to preserve scholarly communication relevant to their position, pedagogy, and major through tutorial understanding on how to utilize Preservica or the Digital Library of Appalachia.
Lesson Plan Two: Ethical/Legal issues regarding copyright and Stanley Library
By the end of this course...
Faculty will be able to identify the purpose of copyright;
Faculty will be able to recognize and verbally explain elements of copyright;
Faculty will be able to define different types of intellectual property;
AND faculty will be able to apply the principles of fair use.
Lesson Plan Three: Open Resources (OER/OA/OAR)
By the end of this course...
Faculty will be able to understand the nature of OER/OAR/OA;
Faculty will be able to understand how OER influence student's barriers to access;
AND faculty will be able to indicate issues and challenges related to OER/AOR/OA.
