Tier 1-Steps for Classroom Teachers

MTSS decisions at the Tier 1 building level are focused on balancing the needs of the entire student population and the resources available to the building. Critical areas for teams to examine include identification of student needs and the effectiveness of the core instruction or the instruction that all students receive every day.

Who needs more support?

One guideline for MTSS implementation is having approximately 80% of the students reach the benchmark criteria. If the percentage is significantly lower than 80%, campuses should intensify their focus on improving Tier 1 instruction for two reasons: 1) campuses do not have the resources to intervene with a large percentage of students and 2) you cannot “intervene” your way out of core instruction that is not effective.

What will the general education teacher do?

General Education teacher will conduct, compile, & evaluate universal screeners and assessments.

General Education Teacher will review student progress, analyze data and discuss with PLC to determine additional areas of support. Once teacher has implemented strategies received through PLC discussions, monitor progress and report back to PLC to determine if the student continues with Tier I differentiation or should be referred to the Campus Intervention Team for consideration of more targeted interventions in Tier 2.

Prior to bringing a student to the CIT committee, a teacher must have reviewed data in Branching Minds AND notify the parent of their concerns.

Note: Ensure the student is not struggling due to a vision/hearing issue. (Check with school nurse to see that student is able to successfully complete the vision/hearing screening.)
