The School Day
FCPS students have a 180-day school year in keeping with Maryland law. The school day at Thurmont Middle begins at 7:25 AM and ends at 2:20 PM. Students should arrive at school no earlier than 7:00 am, and must leave school grounds immediately after dismissal unless they are scheduled to be with an adult in a supervised activity. Supervision is not available for students before or after normal school hours unless prior arrangements have been made with a staff member.
Need to get a message to your child? Did your child forget something?
All messages or forgotten items will be delivered to your child during their lunchtime. We only pull students from class in extreme emergencies.
Birthday celebration gifts such as balloons and flowers will be given to your child at lunch, but will be kept in the office until the end of the day due to the distraction they can potentially create in the classroom setting. Glass containers and balloons are NOT allowed on buses. Birthday cakes and other party-related items are NOT permitted at school.
Visitors
Visitors must report to the Front Office. In general, visiting privileges will be extended to persons invited or given permission by staff members to visit the school for educational purposes, parents or legal guardians of students, and those persons authorized to take students for legal appointments. Parents are always welcome. For security purposes, all visitors must ring our doorbell and be prepared to state the purpose of your visit and show a photo ID. Once inside, all visitors are required to register in our Front Office using the Raptor system by scanning his/her photo ID to obtain a visitor’s pass before going to any other sections of our school. School age children are not welcomed as visitors since they should be attending their own schools.
School Closings
Occasionally, inclement weather requires that school be closed or delayed for some or all schools. Decisions are usually made by 5:30 AM for morning closings and delays and, whenever possible, by 11:30 AM for early closings. Seldom only parts of the school system are closed. If an announcement is made that Catoctin High School and all of its “feeder” schools are closed, these schools include Thurmont Middle School, Thurmont Primary School, Thurmont Elementary School, Sabillasville Elementary School, Emmitsburg Elementary School, and Lewistown Elementary School.
