2. Romeo and juliet

In this unit, we will explore the classic Shakespeare text, Romeo and Juliet. We will be focusing on understanding the format, the language, the humor, and the plot of the text, while also comparing the text to both its historical context and our own modern one. Students will be reading the text aloud, listening to professional performances, and creating some of their own work to complement the text.

Identify the major components of a sonnet.
Evaluate whether or not a poem has the components to be called a sonnet.
Indicate the scansion in lines of poetry to determine whether a poem is in iambic pentameter.
Identify the rhyme scheme in a poem.
Follow sonnet conventions to create my own sonnet, centering on the broad topic of Autumn.
Successfully analyze a piece of a scene focusing on the direct and indirect characterization of the principal players.
Demonstrate an understanding of iambic pentameter by reading aloud from Romeo and Juliet.
Expand vocabulary by interchanging Shakespearean adjectives with modern synonyms and explain the impact this has on tone.
Convert Shakespearean language successfully into modern "tweets" to demonstrate understanding of character and plot.
