The IB MYP is designed for students in grades 6-10 in FCCPS. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The IB encourages students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication and international mindedness - essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.
The IB MYP Curriculum Framework:
Guides students through inquiry-based, conceptually driven learning engagements in all subjects
Addresses holistically students’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being
Provides students opportunities to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need in order to manage complexity and take responsible action for the future
Ensures breadth and depth of understandings through study in eight subject groups
Fosters global awareness by designing instruction around one of six global contexts
Requires the study of at least two languages (language of instruction and additional language of choice) to support students in understanding their own cultures and those of others
Empowers students to participate in service within the community
Helps to prepare students for further education, the workplace
Supports the completion of the Community Project in Grade 8 and the Personal Project, a culminating learning experience, in Grade 10.
In January 2017, MEH was fully authorized to offer the IB MYP in partnership with George Mason High School (currently Meridian High School - MHS) . The implementation process is ongoing, and each year we will continue to grow our program to include the international practices that all IB World Schools adhere to. The International Baccalaureate organization will continue to monitor our progress and provide feedback to MEH and MHS on curriculum development, teaching and assessment practices, and service goals. To that end, staff will continue to receive support and professional development both on campus and at workshops.
