The focus of Physical Education and Health shifts from building a foundation to utilizing prior knowledge and experience in a variety of areas. Students will assess their health-related fitness status and set reasonable and appropriate goals for development and improvement. Cooperative and competitive games focus on developing fundamental skills and strategy. These skills continue to be developed and learned but the focus is now exposing students to an array of content areas. This broad exposure and exploration with movement and activity will hopefully foster an interest in lifetime and health enhancing fitness. All grade levels will also incorporate a variety of technology to assess and improve skill performance and fitness levels. Students assess their health-related fitness status and set reasonable and appropriate goals for development and improvement. All MEHMS PE students will demonstrate supportive behaviors that promote the inclusion and safety of others when participating in physical activity.
The Falls Church City Schools Family Life Education (FLE) Program is designed to meet the desires of the Falls Church community regarding the appropriate content and sequencing of Family Life instruction for students in grades K-10. All grade level instruction promotes abstinence and the benefits of postponing premarital sexual activity. Parents have the option of removing their children from any or all portions of the FLE component of the Health section.

Grade 6
The 6th grade Physical Education curriculum introduces fundamental skills into more complex movement forms in a variety of modified games, fitness and recreational activities. Some of the themes include proper warm up and cool down techniques, monitoring heart rate, spatial awareness, speed training, fitness activities, body strength and flexibility, manipulating objects, and both individual and team activities.
The Health section includes personal health and wellness, refusal strategies related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, dietary guidelines, respect for individual differences, effects of peer pressure, bullying, avoiding risk-taking behaviors, strategies to injury prevention, conflict resolution, and other health issues. Topics in the FLE component include units on Community Resources for Health Care & Safety, Physical Changes during Puberty, STDs/AIDS and Reproduction.

Grade 7
The 7th grade Physical Education curriculum continues to develop their skill competency in a variety of game and sport activities. There is an emphasis on applying their basic skills and learning more advanced principles of movement and strategy in both individual and team activities. Students will also analyze their skill performance and fitness levels throughout the year. Class activities cover a number of themes that will include fitness training, body strength and flexibility, muscular and cardiovascular endurance, manipulating objects, and both individual and team activities. Some of the units include soccer, floor hockey, volleyball, team handball, tennis, fitness room, climbing ropes and the rock wall.
The Health section includes current health issues, recognition of harmful and risky behaviors, stress management, coping with disappointment, nutrition on daily performance, strategies to avoid harmful substances, impact of sleep, advertising techniques used on adolescents, community health, benefits of recreational and leisure activities, implementing safe and healthy practices, the benefits of community service, and other health topics. Topics in the FLE component include Personal & Societal Relationships, Physical Development, HIV/AIDS, and the Benefits of Abstinence.

Grade 8
The 8th grade Physical Education curriculum concentrates on the development of individual fitness, proper social attitudes, and productive use of leisure time. Some of the units include flag football, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball, ultimate frisbee, floor hockey, indoor and outdoor games.
The Health section includes wellness, nutrition, stress management, substance abuse prevention, diseases and disorders, assertiveness skills, health care and current health issues. The Health portion consists of discussions concerning current health issues. Topics in the FLE component include dating, relationships and safety, STD prevention and an introduction to birth control and disease prevention.
