Grade 6
Elective: 9 weeks
Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS I) focuses on personal safety and wellness, preparedness and planning, and the 4 steps of the design cycle. Students will use MyPlate information to plan healthy meals and will learn to prepare several healthy easy breakfast options, while practicing positive and caring relationships with others in the kitchen. Instruction emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts, where appropriate.

Grade 7
Elective: 9 weeks
Students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS II) will focus on understanding wellness, investigating principles of nutrition and reading nutrition labels, ensuring safety in the kitchen, planning menus and preparing food. Students will investigate flavor vs taste, and use what they learn to create new flavors of common foods. Hand sewing will be taught and students will design and create a sewing project of their choice. Critical thinking and practical problem solving are emphasized.

Grade 8
Elective: 18 weeks
Students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS III) will have the opportunity to explore the impact of food around the world. Students investigate sustainability as it relates to the world population and the foods that we eat. Students will explore culinary preparation foundations, practice basic culinary skills, investigate nutrition and menu development, and examine the economics of food through the development of a food truck. Students will use the design cycle to up-cycle something that is no longer useful -- could be a clothing item (by hand or on a machine) or anything else (plastics, wood pallets, old furniture) to learn about sustainability and design.
