During this exploratory class, students will explore art elements and principles of design. Students will use a range of art media and techniques to learn to create art, grow in creativity, and produce two and three dimensional art projects. These will include but not be limited to line drawing, sculptural construction, basic color theory, painting techniques, and constructing an imagined environment using one-point or two-point perspective drawing techniques. Art history and research into relevant concepts will be integrated into each unit.

Students will build on knowledge of the Art Elements and Principles of Design and their application. 7th grade art will refine student's creativity, skills and aesthetics. In project based learning activities such as line drawing, cultural design projects, and sculpture, students will use a wide range of art media to explore creative problem solving and visual communication. Art history and research into relevant concepts will be integrated into each lesson.

Students are able to apply more complex technical skills as they manipulate the elements of art and the principles of design, art media, and ideas. Students acquire art skills that enable them to make conscious choices of media and techniques for expressive purposes and produce works of art that are developed from preliminary ideas and sketches. They compare and contrast art from different world cultures and investigate how context can influence meaning. Students debate the purposes of art, formulate reasoned responses to meaningful art questions, develop their own criteria for making art judgments while developing a personal aesthetic. The acquisition of these skills enables students to develop a worldview, placing the discipline of art within a broader context and relating it to other fields of knowledge. Projects will focus on drawing, value, developing skills of observation, color, considering proportion, and use of color for expressive and representational purposes.

Made by people the world over, crafts have enjoyed a long history and a popular revival. The Crafts curriculum is an exploratory course where students will be exposed to many different kinds of craft from around the globe and study the impact of craft on culture and aesthetics. Students will not only learn about craft materials and techniques, but also build their own creations and develop a personal style. Projects may include techniques in weaving, knitting and crochet, embroidery, and fiber art.

Band 6 is open to all students with little to no experience through students with prior experience playing a band instrument. The course is designed to provide students an opportunity to play a musical instrument throughout an entire school year. The instrument choices for a band student include flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion (keyboard mallets and snare drum). Band students are responsible for providing and maintaining their own instruments (other than large instruments such as tenor saxophone, euphonium, or tuba). Evening concert performances are scheduled throughout the year to showcase the progress and hard work of the aspiring musicians. Solo and Ensemble Festival and private lessons offer extended challenges for those who wish to participate.

Beginning Band is open to all students with little to no experience playing a band instrument. Students will learn the basics of how to play a band instrument, the fundamentals of reading music, and what it means to be a musician. The instrument choices for beginning band include flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion (keyboard mallets and snare drum). Band students are responsible for providing and maintaining their own instruments (other than large instruments such as tenor saxophone, euphonium, or tuba). Beginning band starts with an instrument exploratory unit, where the band teacher will help guide students to make an informed decision about the instrument best suited for them. Evening concert performances are scheduled throughout the year to showcase the progress and hard work of the aspiring musicians.

Intermediate Band 6 is open to 6th grade students with prior experience playing a band instrument. Classes are typically organized by instrument families (example: Brass Class, Woodwinds Class, Percussion class, etc). Students will briefly review the fundamentals of playing before progressing to learn new playing techniques specific to their instrument and refine the artistic skills necessary for playing as part of an ensemble. Band students are responsible for providing and maintaining their own instruments (other than large instruments such as tenor saxophone, euphonium, or tuba). Evening concert performances are scheduled throughout the year to showcase the progress and hard work of the Band. Solo and Ensemble Festival and private lessons offer extended challenges for those who wish to participate.

Symphonic Band is open to all students who seek an advanced band ensemble class to challenge their music abilities. Students will learn complex musical markings and meanings to expand their music literacy, explore advanced playing techniques, and collaborative musical skills on their instruments. As a result of studying these advanced concepts, the ensemble will read, explore, and perform a greater amount of music literature. Symphonic Band is structured to encompass a full-sized ensemble with balanced instrumentation of all the available band instruments. Band students are responsible for providing and maintaining their own instruments (other than large instruments such as tenor saxophone, euphonium, or tuba) and appropriate concert attire. Band students are required to perform for all band concerts listed in the Band Handbook, which is distributed at the beginning of the school year. Additional performing opportunities are available for both individuals and small groups. District band, solo and ensemble festival, and private lessons offer extended challenges for those who wish to participate. Students must audition for the band director to be considered for Symphonic Band.

There are a few evening performances scheduled to showcase the talents of the choir, as well as participation in outside assessments, festivals, and honors choirs. Students must audition for the director to be considered for Advanced Choir 7/8.

Through theatre games, play readings, creative theatre projects and performances, participants will experience the fun and excitement of being “ON STAGE” as they get to perform with their classmates.

Students will continue to explore the world of theatre through pantomime, theatre games and the elements of nonverbal communication (gesture, body language, stage presence). Students will develop acting skills necessary for creative performance and will apply their theatre knowledge through the creation of their own silent film. They will explore ways to think and act creatively while solving problems individually and collaboratively using originality, flexibility and imagination.

Through improvisation, theatre games and activities, scene study, performance and discussion, students will learn to identify, evaluate and implement the skills necessary to tell a story well. Students will learn the art of staging principles to create interesting stage pictures to enhance their performances while discussing elements of theme, technical theatre, and direction.
Students will continue to explore the world of theatre through scene study, character development, playwriting and performance. They will analyze actions and dialogue to discover, articulate and justify character motivations and create behavior based on observation of character interactions.
This semester course will culminate in the performance of a one act play.
140909 ADVANCED THEATRE 8

Elective: Full Year
Prerequisite: Theatre 6 and Theatre 7
Students will brainstorm, create, workshop and produce an original play that will be performed at the end of the course/school year or the class will select two full productions to produce during the year (1 in the Fall and 1 in the Spring). This objective and timeline allow a deeper dive into the following topics: Play production, Directing, Playwriting, Characterization, Scene Study, Lighting, Costume Design, Sound Design, Stage Management and Dramaturgy. Students who are interested in enrolling into the course must audition for the director. Auditions are limited to one minute memorized monologue that can be comedic or dramatic. Students are encouraged to show characterization and strong stage presence in their audition. Additionally students who are interested in design, crew, and directing will be required to read a brief statement on why they should be considered for the course and held to a one minute time limit. Students must audition for the director to be considered for Advanced Theatre 8.
