Ms. Patel is the 2021-22 Kentucky Outstanding Spanish Teacher or the Year and head of the World Languages Department at Frederick Douglass High School. She is always bringing in new ways for her students to demonstrate mastery of the language, and her current assignment for her Advanced Spanish 3 class is no exception.
The assignment was to individually write a short story using the two past tenses Preterite/Imperfect in Spanish. Then in groups they had to choose one, or combine the stories and/or adjust as needed to create a LEGO Stop Motion Movie. She checked out 4 LEGO BricQ Motion kits from the FCPS Lending Library along with the Klutz LEGO Make Your Own Movie Activity Kit. Students used their writing and speaking skills in Spanish as they added a voiceover in Spanish to their movies.
Below is what some of the students wrote about the Lego Movie Project for Adv Spanish 3:
"Each of us created our own short story and we decided to combine them! One story was about a flower who wore her yellow petals to a party but was kicked out by the hostess, Jessica because she was also wearing yellow flowers. The second story was about a princess who saved a dog that jumped into a lake. The third story was about a girl who has always wanted a dog. She saw there was an old dog that no one wanted, so decided to adopt it herself.
We had so much fun with this project! It was a great way for us to apply our creativity to Spanish class! We loved getting to improve our Spanish speaking and writing skills in a fun way.🐕🌼"
