Summer Ignite K - 5 students had a play day with Susan McGrath at Squires Elementary and their LEGO Education BricQ Motion Essential kits! Students in K - 2 read the story Newton and Me and built their own Dog Obstacle Courses. The rising 3rd through 5th graders explored the science behind free throws and completed the Free Throw build after reading about Stephen Curry's life in The Boy Who Never Gave Up. Thanks, Ms. Thompson, for inviting us and playful learning into the week!
Brenda Cowan Elementary Media Specialist Grace Cottam has made full use of the OIT Lending Library and also our Summer MASTER Class training to incorporate LEGO Education solutions into her makerspace. Students have participated in playful learning with BricQ Motion Essential, SPIKE Prime and now with their own set of SPIKE Essential kits.

Students attended the Extended School Services at Coventry Oak Elementary this week learned through play with BricQ Motion Essential's Gravity Car Derby! They read the anchor text Gravity to get started, then built their ramps and soap box cars in groups of 2. After making predictions and testing with no wheels, students tested several different wheels and weight for best distance. They focused on forces of inertia and gravity affecting their cars.
Ms. Vanhoose's Gifted and Talented students have recently been working on developing budgets for the 2032 Olympic Games! And with the 2022 Winter Olympics in full swing, there is no better time for some Bobsled Science! The lesson can be found here: Bobsled
Materials needed: measuring tapes or yardsticks

Students worked in pairs during their 55-minute period to build their bobsled, lift and track and complete test runs on different surfaces for the longest distance. Check out the Engineering Design Process journal they used. Ms. Vanhoose's suggestion for this lesson is to spread it over two class periods. Adjustments were made to save time by having students skip the lift build, and also divide the build into two parts - tower and track - and then coming together for the rest of the build.
Third, fourth and fifth graders at COE participated in their first COE Day by choosing from a variety of hands-on learning opportunities. FCPS OIT team members Rachel Barcus, Susan McGrath, Josh Rayburn and Jason Reed facilitated several groups in Let Go and Launch, where students used the LEGO BricQ Motion Essential Kits to build basketball catapults and investigate the forces and variables affecting their pivot arm to make free throw shots. You can find the LEGO lesson here.
